In May 2003, Reid Hoffman, Allen Blue, Konstantin Guericke, Eric Ly and Jean-Luc Vaillant created LinkedIn, the longest-running social network among the most used today.

LinkedIn is the longest-lived social network among the most used today

At the time Facebook didn’t exist yet (it would be devised by Mark Zuckerberg 9 months later in his dormitory of a student residence at Harvard University), although Friendster was known, which had been created three months earlier, in the month of March. LinkedIn was born with the aim of being a “professional Friendster”, just one month after launching it, more than 4,500 people had signed up for the social network.

The platform has changed a lot since then, at the level of tools and functionalities, but not its objective: to connect professionals. It went public in 2011, being the first social network to do so, and in 2016 Microsoft completed its acquisition, for which it disbursed the amount of 30,000 million dollars, making the purchase the highest value ever made by a technology company.

Currently, LinkedIn has 930 million registered accounts worldwide, at the end of the first quarter of 2023. Of these, 17 million accounts have been created in Spain. The company does not provide monthly or daily unique user data, as other social networks do.

LinkedIn currently has more than 5,000 employees and has offices in 27 countries, although its headquarters are in Mountain View, California. In Spain it has a small commercial office in Madrid since 2012.

More than an online CV or a job platform

With more than 930 million members and a presence in more than 200 regions, LinkedIn has established itself since its creation 20 years ago now as a place where people can interact, share their experiences, knowledge and skills and learn and find new opportunities. labor. In this sense, it is much more than an online cover letter or resume. On LinkedIn, 8 people are hired and more than 9,000 connections are established globally, with around three per second in Spain.

In this context, given the continuous technological advances and a greater demand for qualified talent, a new paradigm shift is taking place in the skills-based hiring model. According to LinkedIn, in Spain the skill set for jobs has changed by around 32% since 2015, and if the changes continue at this rate, skills could change by between 50% and 53% by 2025.

In addition, recruiters today are 25% more likely to search for candidates on LinkedIn by skills than three years ago and 50% more than by years of experience, according to the study “The Future of Recruiting.” Created by the social network.

The platform, as job skills change, makes more than 20,000 LinkedIn Learning courses available to professionals on a wide variety of topics, with around 60 new courses every week, so they can continue to develop professionally. .
