Any developer who wants to present a new App in the Apple store knows that they must meet a series of requirements for their work to reach other users. A series of rules in which Apple influences a lot and for which other companies have been left out, such as Epic Games. Google is not special and must meet those specifications. However, the position of the search engine company makes any movement it takes to be analyzed and the creation of a new browser not based on WebKit has raised suspicions.

The new Google browser does not meet the standards of the App Store and that may indicate that they are going to change… or not.

Google is testing a new browser. A browser that does not meet the basic standards of the Apple App Store. Therefore, will not be able to be implemented on iOS, which is your final destination. It’s not that it doesn’t work. It is that it does not meet the standards to be published in the store and therefore, it will not be able to reach users.

The thing is, Apple’s App Store rules dictate that browser apps on iOS and iPadOS must use their own WebKit browser engine. This means, that while browsers Since Chrome and Microsoft Edge are built with Chromium on macOS and Windows, their iOS counterparts are forced to use Apple’s WebKit. Which makes them behave similar to Safari.

But Google is testing a new one without that engine. So the question is logical. Does Google know something that we don’t? Will the rules of the App Store change? Because if Google does something like that, I don’t think it’s for nothing. There is something.

It is true that the search engine company claims that it is developing this browser only as a prototype to investigate and improve other aspects. It is still missing some key features at this early stage. It is an experimental prototype. “It will not be available to users and we will continue to comply with Apple policies”. But the doubt remains.

What happens is that with so many lawsuits, news and rumors about changes in antitrust laws, it may be that everything is going to change in the short/medium term and Google knows it and is already preparing for it. It should be remembered that the restriction of the Apple browser engine is subject to increased antitrust scrutiny, more recently by the biden Administration, which has recommended the passage of new legislation to prohibit companies, such as Apple, from banning alternative browser engines on its platform.

We’ll be alert.
