The mobile that will reign in the mid-range: we tested the POCO X6 Pro that debuts Xiaomi’s HyperOS system

The phone arrives in Spain with the new operating system and boasts great performance, a careful design and a groundbreaking price.

Almost every year, the mid-range in Spain is the leader in sales compared to other segments. It is not surprising, since the mobile phones that occupy this space in the market go one step beyond what the entry-level range offers , but maintaining prices that are far from the more than a thousand euros that a high-end phone can cost. And POCO, Xiaomi’s sister company, is one of the companies that best moves in this field.

The firm closed last 2023 with the launch of the POCO C65, a smartphone that, although it is a basic terminal, has been able to offer more than much of its competition in terms of features, and for a lower price. Now, the company has launched the POCO

This is the first launch of the company that reaches the Spanish market running HyperOS instead of MIUI, a change in the software with which Xiaomi wants to differentiate its phones more, without being disruptive or abandoning Android or Google services , but with a new roadmap in terms of optimization and design. In EL ESPAÑOL – El Androide Libre we have been able to test this smartphone, and there is a lot to tell.

Although it does not come alone, it has been launched together with the POCO its good quality-price ratio.

The design improves over the years

If there is one section in which you can see the evolution that this family of POCO devices has experienced over the years, it is the design. At the back, there are differences compared to last year’s POCO side by side and which means that there are two clearly differentiated areas.

It mounts three photographic sensors, but to liven up the design, the LED flash is placed on a circumference the same as that of the cameras , so that there are two rows with the same number and thus the aesthetics are more pleasant. Within this strip there is also the brand logo and a small indicator that reveals the resolution of the camera and the presence of an optical image stabilizer.

The rest of the back of the mobile is free, except for the icons with the European certifications at the bottom. It has a small curvature on the back that favors ergonomics and allows it to be used comfortably with one hand. The edges of the POCO X6 Pro are smooth, as is the case on many current phones. The model we have tested is the black one, which is quite sober, although it is also available in yellow and gray .

In this sense, POCO follows market trends, and it is a success. On the right side there are the lock and volume buttons, while on the top there is one of the speakers and an infrared sensor, thanks to which it can be configured as a remote control for many devices using the integrated Xiaomi application .

Category screen

The company has put special love into the screen of this mobile, and it shows. It has a fairly common size on the market, 6.67 inches, and this, added to its 1.5K resolution, means that it can offer great performance with multimedia content. The maximum brightness is 1,800 nits, so when you go outside on a sunny day, there will be no problem when viewing the content on the screen. As an addition, it has a fairly thin frame that borders the panel that makes the front panel very well used.

It is an AMOLED panel with CrystalRes technology, and the truth is that, at first glance, its colors are much more natural than we expected, something it achieves thanks to the “Pro” color scheme, which is selected by default in the settings. Everyone can change this option based on their preferences, but this setting offers a good calibration.

When playing, its 120 Hz makes it possible to enjoy the most fluid movement, and the same thing happens when moving around the interface. There is the possibility of setting the level of the refresh rate , or choosing the dynamic mode, which will adjust it depending on the task being performed. This option is the most recommended in terms of energy efficiency.

Right power for everything

The processor that the POCO X6 Pro has is signed by MediaTek, it is the Dimensity 8300-Ultra. This is the manufacturer’s model that is one step behind its high-end models, but is very close in terms of efficiency and power. This is accompanied by 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage in this model, although there is another with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal memory.

This combination is more than enough to meet the demands of almost any user today, and the good thing is that in the future it will mean that the device will not be greatly affected by the passing of the years and the increase in costs. application requirements. You have the possibility of using virtual RAM memory of up to 8 GB. There is the possibility of activating a high performance mode that will make the mobile use more raw power in exchange for slightly reducing its autonomy, something that can be of great help if there are times when it is taking a while to complete something. task.

POCO X6 Pro cameras

When playing demanding titles like the Asphalt 9, it moves very fluidly, and it is not one of those mid-range phones that works slowly when multitasking. This allows you to carry out downloads and do other tasks without the overall speed of the system dropping noticeably. In terms of performance, it is a good mobile for demanding users, although logically there is some distance compared to alternatives that focus more on this section, such as the Redmagic 9 Pro and its Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

HyperOS makes itself noticed

With the arrival of HyperOS, the company did not want to radically break with MIUI , which is rather an evolution of what has been its customization layer for many years. On a visual level there are some changes, although the general aesthetic is similar to what was before.

One of the most notable changes occurs in the notification curtain, where it has been decided to separate notifications from quick settings again. These are found by default on the right side, and their aesthetics are somewhat reminiscent of their appearance in iOS, with different types of boxes for each setting and the possibility of including multimedia and home automation controls.

On the other hand, some visual elements and sounds of the interface are also different, offering a slight feeling of change. Even so, the device settings offer a large number of possibilities when it comes to customizing elements such as the home screen or lock screen, so each user can enjoy the customization they prefer.

A camera that surprises

In mobile phones that operate in this price range, the photography section is not usually one of their strong points and there are cases in which it is noticeable that the brand has cut back quite a bit in this regard. However, this is not something that can be said about the POCO X6 Pro, which offers a great experience. It has three sensors, the main 64 Mpx, the wide angle 8 Mpx and the macro 2 Mpx.

Of all of them, the one that stands out is the first, which is capable of offering very adequate performance in daytime photography. When the object to be photographed is close, it maintains a high level of detail, and it does so naturally, without excessively increasing the sharpness levels in processing, a resource that some mobile phones often use to make their photographs look better.

It also renders color well, and the portrait mode does not abuse the watercolor effect, so the results look natural. On the other hand, its complementary cameras do not stand out as much, and are used for very specific photographs. In this sense, we always prefer the inclusion of a telephoto sensor, but they may still be able to take good images. Despite this, its main sensor and the processing work that this device does make its camera recommended.

I buy it?

The POCO _ Its base version with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage starts at 349 euros, and it has a great value for money that makes it an attractive device for many types of users.

It is an ideal mobile phone for people who want a powerful smartphone that can run games of all kinds , since not only does it have no problem doing so, but it also works quite well. The same happens when carrying out other tasks such as downloading, streaming or reading.
