Last Sunday (12), the last episode of the first season of The Last of Us, a series that adapts the iconic PlayStation games, was aired.
Even before the end of the season, HBO had already renewed the series for a second season. Given that the first part adapts the first game, many assumed that the second year of production would adapt the second game, but it seems that the broadcaster has bigger plans for the franchise.
In a conversation with GQ, co-creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin spoke about their plans for the show’s second season and revealed that a third season is in the works.
When asked about season two encompassing the entire second game, Mazin replied:
No. There is no way to. It will be more than one season.
Questioned about how many seasons it will take to adapt the content of the second game, the duo did not confirm.
You have correctly noticed that we will not say how many. But it will definitely be more than one.
In the same interview, the duo hinted at how they’ll adapt The Last of Us Part 2’s more complex story structure, which relies on multiple perspectives and changing perspectives.
Mazin said that, just like the first season, there will be some elements that are identical to the game, and others where they make changes.
There are things that are going to be added and enriched. There are some things that will be reversed. Our goal remains exactly what it was in Season 1, which is to deliver a show that makes fans happy.
We have an incredible cast returning. It’s a daunting task. But Jesus, that was the first season. You can’t make everyone happy. But we made a lot of people happy and that’s our intention to do it again.
The second season of the series does not yet have a premiere date.
