India is the largest market for Telegram, where it has 120 million active users. In total, it has 500 million users on the Asian continent, out of a total of more than 700 million worldwide, which gives an idea of the importance of the region for the company.

Perhaps that is why the instant messaging application has launched a significant discount in India that, although it does not end up being extended to the rest of the countries where it operates, represents a significant change in its commercial strategy.

The discount applies to the Telegram premium subscription option, which allows the user to have exclusive options and tools. Its initial price in that country is 469 rupees (5.73 euros) and has become only 179 rupees (2.23 euros). This could be a aggressive attempt to increase customer base of its premium service, which may not have grown as much as Telegram expected when it presented this modality of its application last June.

This reduction could only remain a local strategy and it is too soon to know if the reduction of the Telegram Premium prior would be extended to other markets. Telegram’s payment method includes exclusive features only for subscribers such as being able to follow up to 1,000 channels, send files up to 4 Gb in size or have faster download speeds.

Other platforms such as Twitter, with Twitter Blue, have also increased the features they offer to their users through premium payment methods. In the case of Twitter Blue, highly demanded features are added, such as the possibility of editing tweets, albeit with limitations (only a maximum of five editions in a maximum time of half an hour from the publication of the original). Snapchat also has its premium service.
