Summary of COP27, the conference on climate change

The human being has the bad habit of only acting in the face of threats when they are inside the room and do not let us watch TV. We can shout and warn in a thousand ways, but if the threat in question does not abruptly interrupt day to day, nobody will do anything.

That happened in part with the pandemic, and it will happen with climate change and with the management of natural resources. Until we are all left without the Internet, without a home and without food, we will not react adequately.

This has been shown by the different climate change summits that have been carried out in history, and now we have a new one that has dealt with issues such as houses built with bamboo shoots, zero-emission hydrogen fuels for cars and planes, small nuclear reactors to power Africa or the restoration of oceanic mangroves to store carbon.

The UN climate summit, the COP27has shown discussions of great importance with solutions on how to minimize the dangers of climate change, looking for help in experimental technologiesbut one thing is what is debated there, another thing is what is done on a day-to-day basis, when dealing with things that have nothing to do with the survival of humanity.

These are the most important points covered:

– The United States released a controversial plan to raise billions to help developing nations move away from fossil fuels.
– The emerging countries want rich nations to compensate them for having to bear the brunt of the climate crisis.
– Much has been said about green hydrogen, a zero-emission hydrogen fuel. By 2050, cleanly produced hydrogen could eliminate seven gigatonnes of CO2 emissions annually if successfully scaled. They want countries to push through tax credits to reimburse companies for every kilowatt-hour of energy they produce using green hydrogen.
– Discussed the nuclear energy as a clean energy source. They said nuclear power is already the world’s second-largest source of low-carbon energy, providing about 10 percent of the world’s electricity from about 440 reactors. They discussed small modular reactors, mini versions of traditional nuclear power plants that could be used to power small communities in a similar way to natural gas plants, but without pollution. The United States and Japan announced that they would partner to help implement small modular reactors in Ghana, Africa.
– They commented that the bamboo It better captures and stores carbon from the atmosphere compared to wood, and they believe that planting more can quickly remove carbon from the air, while replenishing it with oxygen. To do this they propose to replace traditional housing materials such as carbon and steel with bamboo, to help reduce carbon emissions caused by the global housing sector.
– Propose restore the oceans and marine ecosystems, since in this way 3 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions could be eliminated, all with restoration projects and blue carbon strategies.

They are good proposals, now we have to put them into practice, but what is urgent always comes before what is important.
