starlink internet satellite

Offering satellite Internet is not new, but it promises to be the next great revolution. How is it possible? Well, thanks to projects that plan to place thousands of satellites in low Earth orbit, much closer than the current ones, and that will be able to offer more speed and less latency to offer Internet in any corner of the planet. Starlink, the SpaceX project, is one of the most famous. These are so close to Earth that the Starlink satellites can be seen with the naked eye. Now, we have access to a complete speed and latency analysis that shows us that not all that glitters in these satellites gold.

Starlink has launched more than 1,500 satellites of a network that will have many more when it is completed. Of those, 1,484 are still in orbit, while the rest have ceased to be operational for various reasons. In addition, a few days ago we learned that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved SpaceX’s request to operate 2,814 Starlink satellites in lower orbits than planned originally, which will allow you to give better performance.

This is how Starlink worked in the first quarter of the year

During the first quarter of the year, a series of measurements were made on the operation of Starlink in United States and Canada. This allows us to see that we can go from excellent performance in one area to poor performance in another area. In this phase of the project, everything seems attributable to the thousands of satellites that still have to be deployed.

In the United States, the average speed has varied considerably, with a recorded maximum of 93.09 Mbps in Shasta County, California. Compared to other providers, there are zones with 545.6% more speed and others with 67.9% less than the competition. In Canada, the average maximum speed has been 80.57 Mbps in Saskatchewan. Here the differences with other providers are not so great, moving between 40% less speed and 60% more.

In relation to latency, the lowest means were observed in Kittitas County, Washington with 32ms. The lowest average latencies are found in Canada with 34 ms. The differences varied considerably in these two countries with respect to the competition, although quite in favor of Starlink in many cases.

Banned for downloading a torrent?

As we can see, Starlink is quite promising, but right now it has a long way to go. However, he is already beginning to be involved in some controversy. Elon Musk has always defended the privacy of the service, that it would not be traceable and many other things. However, we have just learned that a Reddit user has received a statement indicating that his connection has been used to download a copyrighted file.

Starlink

We do not have more details about this decision that Starlink explains is reflected in its terms of use. Users who were hoping to find maximum freedom and privacy in this service may have to seriously rethink things after this notice.
