The other day we confirmed that Spain fell to third position in fiber optic penetration to the home after being surpassed in percentage by Iceland and Belgium. However, there is something that nobody beats us in all of Europe and it has been confirmed with the latest official data in that regard. We are talking about fiber optic speed and here we can confirm that Spain is the European leader in connected homes with 100 Mbps or more. These are the figures and the official ranking at the European level.

Spain is one of the countries with the most fiber in the world and that should end up being noticed when speed rankings are drawn up. Although it is true that we have been surpassed in the percentage among the active lines among the homes of the country (penetration), we can continue to boast of good health with the following report regarding speed. If, in Europe as a whole, 32.9% have 100 Mbps or more speed, in Spain we double that percentage to have 65.5% of households connected at these speeds.

100 Mbps will soon be the minimum speed of all Spanish

With the progressive increase in fiber optic speeds, the average speed of our country has not stopped growing. Right now it is rare to see fiber offers with less than 100 Mbps, being the modalities of 300 or 600 megabytes Most popular. In addition, we already have several operators offering a whopping 1Gbps of fiber optic speed.

According to official figures from the European Union, Spain has a 65.4% of households ultra-fast fixed broadband connections. Being data from June of last year, it is very likely that this percentage has increased compared to the current moment. The second position is for Sweden and the third for Portugal, both also above 60% of households with this type of connections.

If we look for the great powers of Europe, France and Italy directly, we do not have data while Germany has less than 30% of households with ultra-fast fixed broadband connections. The average for the European Union is 32.9% of households with this type of maximum speed connections.

This can be explained if we look at the data corresponding to households that they still have ADSL. In Italy it exceeds 80% while in Germany it is 71.1%. The average for the European Union is 50.4%. For its part, Spain is one of the countries with the least ADSL in Europe, having only 14.1%. Only Romania, Portugal, Sweden and Bulgaria have a lower quota.
