It seems that the time is finally almost ripe for the third generation Sony Xperia Pro smartphone that we could define as “over the top” for a whole series of reasons – it is probably the only range Really Pro on the market, in the sense that its mix of features is specifically aimed at those who work in the field of multimedia content production. The first Xperia Pro came out in January 2021, while its successor arrived towards the end of the same year; nothing new has arrived in 2022, while now rumors are starting to circulate about the next device.
The Japanese site Sumaho Digest has published some details on the photographic setup of the smartphone, which should employ the beauty of three Exmor-T sensors. Sony’s current flagship, the Xperia 1 V, already uses a sensor from this family (moreover a very impressive unit, formed by a good 1”), but only for the main camera.
Exmor, we recall, is a technology that has been found for years on board the company’s most prestigious sensors, which combines analog/digital signal conversion and two-pass noise reduction in parallel. Exmor sensors have been around for years: to date, many of the smartphone sensors belong to the Exmor RS line. It is found on board a large number of smartphone sensors. Exmor T instead debuted with the Xperia 1 Vbut apparently it will represent a family of sensors. Sony says the core technologies of this new generation are dual-layer construction, and dynamic range and noise reduction performance comparable to that of a full-frame camera.
At the moment it is not clear whether the sensors of the new generation of Xperia Pro (which will probably be called quite simply Xperia Pro-II) will be 1″ like the one seen on the Xperia 1 V. It would be a remarkable result but very difficult, given the huge size (at least if you take a smartphone as a reference). We’ll see. However, it seems that the wait will still be quite long: the smartphone shouldn’t arrive before early 2024.
