The Back to School allowance for 2021 is set to close on September 30, The Department of Social Protection has announced.

The allowance helps to cover the cost of school clothing and footwear once the new school year starts in Autumn.

In order to qualify for the allowance, there are certain criteria that applicants must meet.

The applicant must be in receipt of a social protection payment or taking part in an approved employment, training or education scheme.

The child being claimed for must be between the ages of 4 and 17 or aged between 18 – 22 and returning to second-level education in the Autumn.

The income of the entire household must be within a certain limit and each child being claimed for must be a resident in the state.

Rates of payment

There are two separate rates of payment depending on the child’s age. For children aged between 4-11, the payment is €150. For those aged between 12 – 22, the rate is €275.

How to apply

Many applicants will already have received a back to school allowance payment automatically after receiving it the previous year.

If a potential applicant is yet to receive an award letter for the allowance, applicants will need to head over to mywelfare.ie with a verified MyGov ID. Details on how to verify a MyGov ID can be found here.

The closing date for new applications is September 30.
