Update (28/09/2022) – EB

Reports have already indicated that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 should have greater energy efficiency and a higher GPU than the iPhone 14 Pro and today leaker Ice Universe is revealing more details of this chipset. This time, it is informed that Qualcomm must opt for a new core design to achieve these improved results.

As we can see in the Tweet below, the leaker claims that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 should be made up of 8 cores as follows:

  • 1 very high-performance 3.2GHz Cortex X3 core
  • 2 high-performance 2.8GHz Cortex A715 cores
  • 2 2.8GHz Cortex A710 cores
  • 3 2.0GHz Cortex A510 cores for power saving

Another point that should contribute to energy savings is the new TSMC 4nm lithography, the same used in the Apple A16 Bionic present in the iPhone 14 Pro.

It is important to remember that informants have already indicated that the Cortex X3 core was tested at 3.5GHz, but this frequency may have changed during development.

The insider also claims that the GPU, NPU (Neural Processing Unit) and ISP (Image Signal Processor) have received many improvements over the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1, although details on models were not provided this time around.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2: chip should have a GPU superior to that of the iPhone 14 Pro and greater energy efficiency

At the end of August we reported that Qualcomm is working on improving the energy efficiency of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and today new reports from a Chinese leaker indicate that this processor should have a more powerful GPU than the Apple A16 Bionic of the iPhone 14 Pro.

Going into more detail, the insider says that most current processors work at the 3.5GHz frequency, but the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 should surpass this milestone by delivering even more processing power.

Despite the new information, the leaker says that Apple and Qualcomm chips should fight head to head, with a small advantage for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 GPU.

Other information already reported indicates that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 should have 8 cores with 1+2+2+3 architecture, with a high-performance Cortex X3 core, two A720, two A710 and three energy-efficient A510 cores, the GPU should be an Adreno 740. The lithograph must be 4nm from TSMC.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2: Qualcomm works to improve chipset power consumption

Qualcomm has been working to introduce the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with a number of improvements. This week, new rumors indicate that the company now wants to focus on two points: good performance and autonomy.

For this, the company called on the teams that worked on the development of the Snapdragon 835 so that the new chipset can perform above the average of competitors.

Of course, the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 must be built on TSMC’s 4nm process, and it will have a Cortex-X3 core with 25% higher performance than the X1 of the current Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

The SoC will also feature two Cortex-A715, two Cortex-A710 and three Cortex-A510 cores.

Image/reproduction: acquisTC. New chipset should focus on autonomy and performance.

To achieve good performance in the field of autonomy, Qualcomm wants to use the new chipset arrangement to turn cores on and off more easily and without harming the overall performance.

Thus, at times, this adjustment may extend smartphone life time away from outletwith people working at Qualcomm confirming that battery tests have been getting good numbers.

Qualcomm wants to prevent the new chipset from repeating a problem found in the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1. That’s because the chipset works under heavy pressure in the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and the lack of cooling space made the smartphone less efficient than the Z Flip 3 when the issue is energy consumption.

It is worth remembering that the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 should be officially announced in November, with the first smartphones with the chipset hitting the market later this year.
