The instant messaging platform Signal has presented a new function that allows its users make donations from the app itself. This will allow the maintenance of the platform itself, since it is based on a non-profit initiative and depends on the donations made by its users.

Signal is a non-profit platform that depends for its support on donations from its users

These donations that users make in favor of Signal can be configured as one-time or periodic, so that a monthly amount be donated in favor of the platform through Apple Pay or Google Pay, being guaranteed by Signal that the payment information is not associated with the identity of the Signal user. The latter seems almost inevitable given the nature of this messaging platform in terms of maximum respect for the privacy of its users.

Since its inception, that respect for privacy and the reinforcement of security in communications has been the hallmark of Signal, which at the beginning of this year 2021 began to add some more general characteristics and similar to those of other instant messaging platforms such as WhatsApp or Telegram, including wallpapers or stickers, due to the increase in the number of its users and the meteoric popularization of the Telegram app.

All these innovations and the increase in their use have also raised the costs of sustaining the platform, which has made it necessary to include donations to help finance it. For this, three levels of donations have been established for the value of 5, 10 and 20 dollars, each of which has an associated identification badge that users can wear with their avatar.
