Samsung is one of the companies that gives the best and most extensive support to its phones. Apart from the good Android update policy, they have a veritable galaxy of applications, some of them being very interesting. And the South Korean company has the habit of updating these applications to improve their functions and performance.

One of the latest movements has been the update of the complementary camera app Camera Assistant, which reaches version 2.0 with improvements for high-resolution photos. Of course, it does not reach all models. Next, we tell you What is this new Samsung camera update and how can you install it?.

How to improve the Samsung Galaxy camera

It must be recognized that Samsung does not make it easy accessing some of the improvements they launch for their phone cameras. And the camera application has the typical configuration settings, but in addition, there is a complementary application called Camera Assistant.

It is not installed by default on our mobile nor is it accessible first through the camera settings: you have to download it from the Galaxy Store. This means that the user must go to the Galaxy Store, search for the ‘Camera Assistant’ app and download it.

It is not another camera application, but rather a series of settings that we can apply and that are automatically executed in the camera application. Once installed, we can also access these improvements through the camera configuration section.

And no, they are not small improvements. For example, a few months ago Samsung added a 2x digital lossless telephoto to the Galaxy S23 through this application. If you did not have it installed, you could not access this interesting novelty. And, if you are interested (we recommend it), you can download it through this link.

Camera Assistant was focused on the premium range, but a few weeks ago Samsung announced that it would reach some mid-range Samsung Galaxy and, now, we have news again.

This month, the application has been updated twice: once to add improvements to the Galaxy S24 and another with improvements for other phones. They are interesting improvements, since one of them It directly affects the digital zoom when we take high resolution photos. We leave them to you below:

  • Distortion correction– Automatically corrects bowed or bent lines caused by lens and perspective distortion.
  • Expand digital zoom– If the resolution decreases due to zoom, enlarges the photos to the selected resolution.
Samsung Galaxy Camera Improvements

The description of the first option is quite clear, but the truth is that the digital zoom is somewhat diffuse. This is a setting that is in the ‘High resolution settings’ section and works when, on the camera, we select the full resolution of the sensor and zoom in.

That is to say, Yes we have the Galaxy S23 with its 50 megapixel sensor and we select this resolution for the photograph, obviously it will take a photo at 50 megapixels. However, if we digitally zoom in that mode, the resulting file will have a resolution of 12 megapixels. If we activate the new Camera Assistant option, the resulting file in that same circumstance will be expanded to 50 megapixels.

From the tests I have been able to do, the quality is maintained between both files, but obviously if we have the option activated, we will have a much larger resulting image. This can be useful if we take a photo at 50 megapixels and apply a 2x zoom since we will still have a 50 megapixel file instead of a 12 megapixel one.

Improved Samsung Galaxy High Resolution Camera

What phones does this update work on? There are two requirements here: have One UI 5.1 at least and one of the following models:

  • Galaxy S23 Family
  • Galaxy S22 Family
  • Galaxy S21 Family
  • Galaxy S20 Family
  • Galaxy Note 20 Family
  • Galaxy Z Fold5
  • Galaxy Z Flip5
  • Galaxy Z Fold4
  • Galaxy Z Flip4
  • Galaxy Z Fold3
  • Galaxy Z Flip3
  • Galaxy Z Fold 2
  • Galaxy Z Flip

Also on mobile phones with One UI 6 or higher that are those mentioned above and those that we leave below:

  • Galaxy S24 Family
  • Galaxy A73
  • Galaxy A72
  • Galaxy A54
  • Galaxy A53
  • Galaxy A52S
  • Galaxy A52
  • Galaxy M54
  • Galaxy F54

Obviously, if the mobile does not have a sensor larger than 12 megapixels, this high-resolution zoom improvement will not be compatible, but many of the features that are in Camera Assistant will be supported.
