Manufacturers like Samsung have come a long way in recent years when it comes to the speed with which they release Android updates. In fact, Samsung tends to get ahead of Google in many cases when it comes to launching security patches. However, there remains a black spot in Samsung’s update schedule: the lack of support for seamless A/B updates. Last fall, we found ourselves hoping that the Galaxy S23 series could buck the trend and eventually embrace seamless updates, but unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case. The idea behind seamless upgrade support is to minimize downtime when upgrading your phone. Instead of having to go through a lengthy reboot and installation process, a phone with seamless updates can install its software on a second partition while you continue to use the main one. Then, when everything is ready, you can boot into the new one with hardly any interruptions. But it’s not like that. Now that the Galaxy S23 Ultra is already in the hands of the media like ours, it has been possible to verify with the Treble Info tool that Samsung has not turned the page: the Galaxy S23 Ultra does not support seamless updates.

While not surprising given Samsung’s reluctance to make this change, it’s still frustrating. Maybe next year Samsung will drop the 128GB input capacity and thus be left with fewer excuses for not implementing this functionality.
