In recent weeks, rumors have emerged about the possibility that Samsung is working on one own GPU, based on AMD’s RDNA architecture (with which it has just renewed its partnership), which could debut with what will be the top of the range SoC of 2025, or the Exynos 2500; in the past few hours further developments have emerged: the South Korean giant would hire Jiao Yang, something of a superstar in the field of GPU architecture development. The headboard supports it 36kr; the engineer will take care of planning the project and creating the development teams.

Jiao Yang has a distinguished past at Huawei, where he was responsible for establishing the R&D center for HiSilicon subsidiary HiSilicon’s Kirin SoC graphics chips, and at Alibaba, where he helped build the Hanguang 800, an NPU that was the fastest at the time of its introduction in the world in the field of AI Inference, and was capable of processing over 78,000 images per second. More recently, he was responsible for the AI chip division at Li Auto, a Chinese electric vehicle maker.

But Samsung has no intention of stopping there: he would also be looking to sign Jiao Guofang, co-founder of Biren Technology, a startup founded in 2019 by several ex-NVIDIA and Alibaba specialists in the creation of GPUs. Last summer Birentech presented its first card, the BR100, dedicated to the world of datacenters/servers. Guofang was also a key employee of Qualcomm: he was responsible for the assembly of the Snapdragon team and contributed to the development of the fifth generation Adreno GPU architectures.

It is no mystery that Samsung’s SoC division is in trouble, especially in the most prestigious segment of the market: as we have personally demonstrated on several occasions, the top-of-the-range Exynos are simply not able to compete on equal terms with the Snapdragons. Over the last year, many rumors have emerged, often conflicting, on the strategy that the company is trying to pursue in order to become competitive again. Because yes, the details won’t always coincide, but everyone agrees: Samsung doesn’t intend to give up.
