With the RTX 4000, its new GPUs under Ada Lovelace architecture, Nvidia is also launching a new generation of DLSS, its super-sampling technology supported by artificial intelligence. While we expect the RTX 4090 for October 12, 2022, the experts at Digital Foundry were able to try DLSS 3.0, and as much to say that the performance in game is revolutionary.
As you may know, Nvidia took advantage of GTC 2022 to officially lift the veil on the RTX 4080 and 4090, its future graphics cards based on the new Ada Lovelace architecture.
The RTX 4090 is already shaping up to be a powerhouse, with performance
4 times higher on Ray-Tracing games than the RTX 3090 Ti, the former green team flagship. To do this, the graphics card can in particular rely on DLSS 3.0one of the great innovations introduced with the GPUs under Lovelace.
DLSS 3.0, the great novelty of the RTX 4000
Indeed, Nvidia also presented during the conference the latest version of its AI-assisted super-sampling technology. “DLSS analyzes sequential frames and motion data from the new optical flow accelerator of GeForce RTX Series 40 GPUs to create the highest quality additional frames without compromising visual quality and responsiveness.” explains Nvidia.
More precisely, the main novelty lies in the exploitation of the DLSS 3.0 of an innovation present in the RTX 4000: Ada Optical Flow acceleration. To sum up, this technology allows DLSS to predict the movements of a scene, in order to allow the neural network to increase the number of frames per second while maintaining optimal image quality. This capability takes the form of a new option, DLSS Frame Generationonly available on Nvidia’s latest GPUs.

Up to 5 times better performance in 4K
However, our colleagues from the Digital Foundry site were able to get their hands on an RTX 4090 as well as three games in preliminary version compatible with DLSS 3.0, namely Marvel’s Spider-Man, Portal RTX and Cyberpunk 2077 (not the upcoming RT Overdrive version, but a custom version ready for DLSS 3.0).
The opportunity for these experts to share the results of their first tests on DLSS 3.0. In short, users can expect these titles to a 2-5x performance increase in 4K. Here are the percentages shared by Digital Foundry:
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: +219% with DLSS 3.0 Frame Generation enabled
- Cyberpunk 2077 (Night City Marketplace): +399% with DLSS 3.0 Frame Generation enabled
- Portal RTX: +291% with DLSS 3.0 Frame Generation enabled
Note that Digital Foundry has not been authorized by Nvidia to publish the exact framerate obtained on these different games, but only the performance differences between the game in native 4K, with DLSS 2.0 activated and with DLSS 3.0 Frame Generation.
