As happened in the past with the implementation of DTT as the television standard, the radio prepares for a new evolution. The classic FM radio is already beginning to become outdated and streaming is not as popular on the radio as in other formats. The solution? The adoption of the DAB+ standard as is already happening in many European countries.

RTVE thus launches the fruits of its union with the WorldDAB association and next year it will begin to broadcast in this format so full of advantages to revolutionize digital radio.

A new era of digital radio on RTVE

Last September, Spanish Radiotelevision (RTVE) decided join WorldDABthe association that promotes the adoption of digital radio worldwide based on DAB/DAB+ standards (from Digital Audio Broadcasting).

The future of radio in Spain depends on the implementation of DAB+, as is happening in most of the countries in our European environment. In the case of a public audiovisual service provider, as is the case with RTVE, there are also mandates that require it to provide maximum social and geographic coverage, with the highest quality and best technology available.

It must be taken into account that, today, the penetration of linear radio distributed over the Internet via streaming is only 7% of the Spanish population. And that in those markets where digital radio is already implemented, DAB/DAB+ is the platform with the highest consumptionahead of linear radio distributed over the Internet.

Thus, the public entity has decided that it will implement this standard starting next year, which is so close to us. Although Spain launched DAB services in Madrid and Barcelona in the 1990s, the technology was never widely implemented. However, in recent years, the number of DAB+ receivers in Spanish cars has grown substantially thanks to European regulations that require new cars to incorporate this technology.

Advantages of the DAB+ standard

With DAB/DAB+ You do not need an Internet connection to listen to the radio. Like FM or DTT, it is a service that is provided openly and without subscription. Furthermore, unlike linear radio distributed over the Internet, DAB/DAB+ services are resilient in the event of disasters.

This update, which will replace the FM radio, is transmitted thanks to the MPEG-4 HE AAC V2 codec, similar to that of DTT. In the case of the DAB+ evolution, the expected quality would be similar to that of a CD. Another advantage over traditional radio is that it is capable of transmit metadatafor example to provide more information such as the cover of the album that is playing, the lyrics of the song or headlines of the news that is being told, etc.

RTVE is now prepared to deploy digital radio technology throughout Spain and is working with government regulators to ensure a suitable framework for DAB+ that allows RTVE to have the maximum coverage allowed.
