An RTE cameraman who captured the famous footage of a man slipping on ice in Dublin city centre looks back at the moment 12 years on.

Colm McCaughey works as a cameraman for RTE and shot the unfortunate mishap in January 2010, when a man slipped on RTE News while walking on Church Street near the Four Courts in Dublin city.

Colm said: “I don’t know where this guy came from behind me out of nowhere and he was just walking by the camera and he just went flying and hit the deck.

“We ran over to him like straight away because he really took quite a wallop, and I wasn’t even sure if we were recording at that stage. It’s one of those shots where you think ‘did I get that or did I not get it?'”

Colm and his colleagues went over to check on the man, who he described as being “a bit shook”.

He added: “We offered him a cup of tea down in the office but he didn’t want to, he just wanted to get home I think.”

The famous bulletin by John Kilraine has led to over a decade of speculation as to who the man could be, although no one has come forward yet.
