A new banking malware was discovered in 203 applications made available on Android and iOS operating systems that can steal sensitive information such as account number and password from users. This threat was discovered this month, setting off a red flag for cybersecurity companies and researchers alike due to the gravity of the situation.

The identification of malicious apps was made by the Ministry of Economy and Digital Society of Thailand (DES) and the National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA), entities that together found the virus hidden in applications of different categories, including personalization, productivity and games.

Google and Apple were warned about the huge breach in security that could result in numerous problems for victims, such as credit card fraud, exposure of bank details, etc. This is not the first time that malicious services have been offered in official stores, but it stands out for its proportions.

DES Minister Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn said “the public is being asked to look out for malicious apps. If they are downloaded, hackers can steal your personal data or take control of your phones”, reinforcing the need to immediately uninstall affected apps.

“These apps have been known to steal money from bank accounts, obtain personal data stored on affected mobile devices, and even give attackers complete control over victims’ phones and tablets.”
