Redmi Watch 2 Lite, analysis: the quality / price made watch

Sometimes it is difficult to understand Xiaomi’s strategy when it comes to launches. Those who are up to date with the news of the firm have surely realized how chaotic and confusing its catalog of smartphones can be , but with smart watches it is not that something very different happens. The Redmi Watch 2 Lite , the latest smartwatch that the company has brought to Spain, is the most obvious proof.

The Redmi Watch 2 Lite is the spiritual successor to the Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite (which in China was the Redmi Watch ) and the differences in terms of specifications are few. In fact, at first glance they are practically the same, so the question to ask is what does the Redmi Watch 2 Lite offer? From Voonze we have already had the opportunity to try it to bring you this, its analysis , so we are going to do it.

This is how Xiaomi makes money – they lure you in and suck you in

We start, as always, talking about design. We could summarize it in a couple of lines: imagine the Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite. Do you have it in your head? Well, now make it a bit thinner, a bit less wide and put a screen a bit bigger by slightly trimming the bottom frame. voila! You already have a Redmi Watch 2 Lite. Otherwise, the device is practically identical to the previous model.

The Redmi Watch 2 Lite is a watch finished in black plastic whose touch is not the most premium in the world, but it is not that we are paying for it either. It’s nice enough to wear comfortably on your wrist, and thanks to its low weight (35 grams), you hardly notice you’re wearing it.

Xiaomi Redmi Watch 2 Lite 13

On the right side we have a button made of aluminum with good travel and a quite pleasant click . Curiously, it does not have any type of engraving that allows us to quickly locate it when we have dirty or wet hands. The button is used to wake up the screen, access the application drawer, return to the main screen or turn off the clock if we leave it pressed, but that’s it. It cannot be remapped in any way.

And little else, really. In another context, we would now comment on the location of the speaker and microphone, but this device does not have such components . Like the Mi Watch Lite, it is a simple, square, quite simple and functional watch. It does not have great boasts of design, as expected.

If we turn it around we will see the PPG sensor with its green LEDs, the SpO2 sensor with its red LED , the photodiodes and the charging pins that, together with the base that we will talk about later, we will use to recharge the watch battery. It is exactly the same as its predecessor.

Where are the differences, then? The Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite was made of aluminum, while the Redmi Watch 2 Lite is made of plastic . The previous one had the button slightly moved up, while the Redmi Watch 2 Lite has it in the center. Finally, the screen of the Mi Watch Lite protruded a little more from the case than that of the Redmi Watch 2 Lite. For the rest, the differences we already see that they are scarce.

Regarding the strap, we have a 140-210 millimeter TPU strap with a conventional buckle closure and proprietary lace. What does that mean? That we cannot use any strap that we have at home, but those that have been designed for this watch.

The strap is not the best, but to the touch it is fine. The material is similar to the silicone of the Mi Smart Band straps , so without offering the most premium feel in the world, it’s a decent strap and, from my point of view, enough that we don’t need to change it.

Screen: a bit bigger and brighter

Xiaomi Redmi Watch 2 Lite 15

So we go to the screen. If the Mi Watch Lite mounted a 1.4-inch TFT/LCD screen with 320 x 320 pixels of resolution, the Redmi Watch 2 Lite has a 1.55-inch TFT/LCD panel with 320 x 360 pixels of resolution . Surely you have noticed that there are 40 pixels higher, and it is because one of the changes that the screen of this watch has is that the lower frame has been slightly reduced, which has allowed the diagonal of the screen to be enlarged.

The screen is square, although the corners are slightly curved. Personally, I appreciate a slightly higher brightness level than Xiaomi’s first watch and slightly more vivid colors. However, we are talking about a TFT/LCD panel, which means that the blacks are not completely pure as they are on AMOLED screens, although the watchfaces manage to hide this.

Xiaomi Redmi Watch 2 Lite 8

The resolution is more than enough not to see pixels with the naked eye from a reasonable distance . The interface, for its part, is well adapted to the format (as we will see later) and the brightness is correct, although not perfect. Why? Because the Redmi Watch 2 Lite does not have automatic brightness (the Mi Watch did). This means that we have to adjust the brightness manually at all times, so my recommendation is that you use level three.

As far as the tactile response is concerned, it is correct, but the performance of the device is not so good. That translates into a feeling of slowness in gestures and scrolling between screens, and it’s not because the screen is not responsive, but because the operating system is heavy and the clock does not have enough muscle to move it properly. At least this model does have animations when switching between screens.

Although the screen responds correctly, the operating system is not as smooth as we would have liked

To wake up the screen we have to use the side button or the gesture of looking at the time. Both options work equally well. To turn it off, simply cover the screen with the palm of your hand. My personal recommendation is that you activate the “Do not disturb” mode when you go to bed to prevent an involuntary movement from waking you up because you forgot to lower the brightness. Believe me, it’s three seconds and you gain a lot in quality of life.

As for customization, about 100 different covers can be accessed from the Xiaomi Wear app . There is something for all tastes and some of them are interactive, so that if we click on one of the complications, the application in question will open. It is a matter of taking a look and seeing which one we like the most, there are plenty of options.

Performance: the weakest point

Xiaomi Redmi Watch 2 Lite 17

So we go on to talk about performance, but not before making a note of compatibility. The Redmi Watch 2 Lite has Bluetooth 5.0 and is compatible with iOS 10 or higher and Android 6.0 or higher . On paper, this requirement should not be a problem. The app that we will use to link the watch to the mobile is Xiaomi Wear, which is not, by far, as complete as Mi Fit. It is available on Google Play and the App Store and it goes without saying that it is completely free.

The Redmi Watch 2 Lite uses an RTOS system ( Real Time Operating System or real-time operating system). As such, it is an operating system that does not allow the installation of third-party applications and does not support the wireless payment methods that we often use, such as Google Pay. Therefore, the apps we have are the only ones out there and we have to forget about paying with the watch.

Xiaomi Redmi Watch 2 Lite 16

Fortunately, the device has all the necessary applications to get the most out of its functions, from all those related to health to some additional ones, such as music control (it is not an integrated player, but a controller of the music that is playing on mobile) and mobile camera remote control , which works even on iOS. The problem is that if we want to expand the options with third-party apps, it won’t be possible.

Apps are laid out in a 3×3 grid , making it intuitive to navigate between them. However, it is not possible to reorder them or uninstall those that we do not want to use. What we can do is change the display from grid to list, a matter of taste.

Xiaomi Redmi Watch 2 Lite 15

The performance of the watch is undoubtedly its weakest point . The animations are a bit slow and a little more fluidity is missing. In addition, during the analysis we have experienced some occasional disconnection. If there is a point where the watch should improve, it is, without a doubt, this.

The representation of notifications is poor, since it shows us the text and asterisks instead of emojis (at least on iOS). It is not possible to answer them , not even with predetermined messages. The same thing happens with calls, which we can receive or hang up from the wrist, but not answer them (obviously, because the watch does not have a microphone or speaker). It is also not compatible with voice assistants or integrated in any way with the rest of Xiaomi’s connected ecosystem.

Heart rate

Heart rate.

With that said, let’s talk about health apps. The Redmi Watch 2 Lite has a heart rate sensor that measures our heart rate in ranges of 30, ten, five and one minute. The higher the frequency, the higher the battery consumption. It also allows us to receive alerts when the heart rate drops or exceeds a certain rhythm. The sensor seems relatively accurate to us, but as we always say, it is not a medical device and the figures must be taken with tweezers.

It also analyzes sleep and, based on the reports and referring to our mood, we can conclude that it does so with relative accuracy. Also, if we turn on advanced monitoring (which uses heart rate for REM sleep tracking) we’ll get more detailed metrics.

As for SpO2 , the watch is capable of monitoring the level of oxygen in the blood automatically, but only during sleep and only if we activate it manually from the settings. It is a pity that this active sensor cannot be worn all the time. We can configure the clock to take measurements every ten or every 30 minutes. From our tests, it doesn’t seem too accurate.

Finally, the device allows us to monitor our stress using heart rate variability. It is a metric that seems inaccurate to us, since at all times it has shown us excessively high stress values, even in moments of relaxation, such as at 1:30 in the morning, where theoretically I had a stress peak of close to 100.

Play sports with the Redmi Watch 2 Lite

Xiaomi Redmi Watch 2 Lite 12

We continue talking about sport, a section that has improved compared to the previous generation. If this model had 11 sports modes, this includes about 100 , so we will be more than served. There are the classics, like running or walking, but also some like swimming, since the watch is water resistant to five atmospheres.

During the exercise session we can see our performance, the route, the calories burned and other useful information, but it is always convenient to take this data with tweezers . As we saw before, the sensors do not shine for their precision. It is not a watch designed for advanced athletes, so if you are looking for detailed metrics and greater precision, it is better to consider more advanced options from sports brands such as Garmin or Polar.

Route recorded with the GPS.

Another thing we can do during the session is to control the music that is playing on our smartphone , which is not bad at all. In addition, it should be noted that the Redmi Watch 2 Lite has a built-in GPS chip , something that is not seen every day in watches in this price range. It is compatible with GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou and has its pluses and minuses.

Having an integrated GPS chip allows us to record the route we have followed without having to always carry the phone with us

Its pluses: that it is quite fast when setting up, very fast, especially if we start it outdoors, and that the connection is stable. Its minuses: It ‘s not totally accurate . You can follow the route followed without problem, but there are rare deviations in the route. It is not a problem nor is it too important, but the truth is that, if we want an accurate measurement, with this device we are not going to achieve it.

As for the report generated by the application, it is not the most complete in the world, but it is enough . We can see the route followed with the pace followed, the cadence and the heart rate. Again, a sufficient report, but not particularly extensive. It should be noted that the app integrates with Apple Health and Strava, but not with Google Fit.

Battery: one week of heavy use

Xiaomi Redmi Watch 2 Lite 18

We finish the analysis by reviewing the battery. Inside the Redmi Watch 2 Lite we have a 262 mAh battery that offers us a theoretical maximum autonomy of ten days of normal use and five days of intensive use. The truth is that Xiaomi has not deviated in the least with these figures, because they are precisely the ones that we have obtained.

As we always do in the analysis, we have worn the watch throughout the day, with the sensors working at their maximum and making occasional use of the GPS. The result has been, precisely, five days nailed . It is a correct autonomy, although lower than that offered by basic Amazfit devices, such as Bip U and Bip U Pro , for example.

The charge is made through a base with pins. The dock only fits into one position with these pins, as normal, and charging takes about two hours to complete . Here there has been an interesting improvement, and that is that instead of having a clamp base, we have a smaller and more intuitive system to use.

Redmi Watch 2 Lite, Xataka’s opinion

Xiaomi Redmi Watch 2 Lite 4

At this point, we can conclude that the Redmi Watch 2 Lite is more of a watch-shaped quantifying bracelet than a regular smart watch. It does not offer the functions of its own that the most powerful smartwatches usually offer, so it really seeks to offer a solvent and sufficient experience in a different format.

It is a simple watch that does not go any further. It offers basic health metrics, a GPS chip, notifications and calls, but little else. It is a shame that it is not integrated in any way with the ecosystem of Xiaomi products , something that, honestly, Xiaomi is taking a long time to do. It is a device that is too independent and that, really, does not offer something that other watches do not already offer, both from the brand itself and from others.

The improvements with respect to the Mi Watch Lite are subtle and make fitting this model into the Xiaomi catalog complex

Is it a good watch? Quality / price ratio, without a doubt , but it is not the most complete watch on the market by far. The improvements in the screen and the GPS times are appreciated, but the difference with respect to the previous model is minimal, so minimal that it is difficult to fit this watch into the Xiaomi catalog.

Its price is 69.99 euros , ten euros more than the Mi Watch and 20 euros more than the Mi Smart Band 6. Is the increase justified? It will depend on each user. If we value the GPS, the largest screen and the largest number of sports modes, go ahead. For 70 euros it is a good option, as long as we are aware of its limitations.

In favor

  • It has integrated GPS chip and fixes quite fast.
  • Battery to last five days using it to the fullest.
  • It is very comfortable and light.

  • The improvements over the Mi Watch are not noticeable.
  • It is not part of a larger connected ecosystem.
  • The performance of the operating system is improvable.
