Portugal’s Cybersecurity Council issued a resolution that may formally ban the use of Huawei’s 5G equipment and other Chinese manufacturers.

According to the text, the measure follows a law passed in August last year that gives powers to the Portuguese government to determine the “exclusion, restrictions on use or cessation of use of equipment or services” by telecommunications companies.

Without directly mentioning China or the name of any specific provider, the CSSC warned of the high security risk that certain providers pose to national security. In other words, the same argument used by the United States.

These companies are headquartered in a country where the government exercises control, interference or pressure on their activities in third countries.

Another argument of the body includes the fact that these suppliers – namely Chinese – do not have data protection agreements with Portugal or the European Union.

Commenting on the matter, the main operators in the country said that they no longer use Huawei equipment in 5G, but, as the network is not yet standalone, there may be cases where 4G equipment helps in 5G.

Huawei has issued an official statement on the matter:

The company had no prior knowledge and was not consulted on this matter. Huawei continues to gather information about the nature of the security assessment and looks forward to continuing to serve Portuguese customers.

For now, the government of Portugal has not manifested itself.
