The smartphone market is suffering, it has been seen both globally and in Europe, thanks to a series of macroeconomic and geo-political factors which compromised its growth. And the trend is the same even beyond the Atlantic Ocean: in North America the decline is more contained, yes, but still evident with the -6% recorded in the second quarter of 2022 compared to the same period of the previous year.

NEW ENTRY IN NORTH AMERICA

From data published by Canalys interesting information can be extrapolated relating to an actor that we do not find (yet) in the world and European quarterly statistics: the reference goes to Google which also in the USA and Canada represents a sort of a new entry. A significant fact that indicates how slowly the design of the Mountain View company is starting to take shape. In fact, we recall how with Pixel 6 and 6 Pro Sundar Pichai has expressly expressed the desire to gain market share in the hardware sector, and this actually seems to happen precisely starting from the market domestic Google, aka North America.

And precisely where Apple has over 50% market share (52%, to be precise, compared to 48% the previous year), Google gains ground by reporting an exceptional + 230% in shipments. Translated, from the 200,000 Pixels shipped in Q2 2021 we have passed to 800,000 in Q2 2022. A very important result for the company, which, however, should not surprise too much precisely due to the desire repeatedly expressed by the management to forcefully enter the top brands of the mobile market.

The 2% stake in Google it is therefore a scoring result the entry of a new player in the North American landscape. Being in the Top 5 is certainly due to Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, but also to a 6a – announced in May – which for its quality-price ratio can only positively contribute to the performance of shipments. Looking forward to Pixel 7 and 7 Pro.

It remains to be seen now how long it will take Google to appear in the Top 5 in other markets. Competition in Europe is even tighter with many Chinese brands now firmly rooted and unwilling to leave precious market shares to others.
