Telegram is under pressure to reveal data of users who allegedly committed piracy crimes from the Supreme Court of Delhi, India. In this way, the application must provide information about people’s channels, IP addresses, emails and mobile numbers. In addition, the company has to disclose which devices are used to spread the content illegally.

It is worth remembering that the messenger has already been condemned in Israel for not showing efficiency in combating actions in his channels and groups. What happened was in 2021 and in 2020 another case similar to India happened in Italy. At the time, the pressure was due to piracy of newspapers in the country, which generated this situation.

In India, the origin of the problem was due to the complaint of a teacher, who had her material published in channels within Telegram. She claims that her PDFs and video lessons were distributed without her permission. The app, in turn, said it never reveals the data of its users, with only terrorism as the only exception.

This generated a debate among the Court’s judges, with several opinions disagreeing with Telegram’s actions. For example, one of them said that crimes committed by messenger users cannot go unpunished, even if their servers are installed in Singapore. The company has yet to comment on the Supreme Court’s decision.

It is valid to say that piracy still plagues many countries around the world, even Europe, which has had applications and websites overturned by the courts for content of this type within the Metaverse.
