With the “Mimic Presence” function, Philips Hue lights simulate presence in an abandoned home. New lamps were also presented at the IFA.

At the IFA, Signify announced a new function for its Hue lights that is intended to protect against burglars: “Mimic Presence” is intended to use automatic lighting to suggest that someone is at home even when the residents are absent – at the expense of additional power consumption.

For this purpose, specified Hue lights can be switched on and off automatically at the times at which they are usually used when people are present. The function, which is controlled via the Hue app, therefore recreates the typical usage patterns in order hopefully to deceive particularly attentive burglars. According to Signify, lights can be activated individually for the function. It should also be possible to only activate the feature when it is dark outside. “Mimic Presence” should be available in the Hue app from the beginning of September.

Signify also presented hardware products at the IFA in Berlin. This includes several smart “Lightguide” lamps with a glow stick, which are said to be available in three different shapes. They will go on sale in the 4th quarter and cost between 85 and 100 euros. In addition to the lamps, Signify wants to offer decorative cord holders for 50 euros.

Finally, Hue has announced new gradient lightstrips that are particularly suitable for use on gaming monitors: They can display several colors at the same time and thus provide the right lighting when gaming. With the help of the Philips Hue Sync desktop app, the LED strips automatically adapt to what is happening on the monitor.

The new Gradient Lightstrips are available in three different sizes: The smallest version costs 150 euros and, according to the manufacturer, is suitable for use on monitors from 24 to 27 inches. The middle variant covers screens between 32 and 34 inches for 220 euros. There is also a set for particularly enthusiastic gamers who use a setup with three monitors for 260 euros. All three versions should be available from September 13th.
