The new iPhone and Android version 8 of the password manager requires a cloud subscription. For users of version 7, the upgrade should not be automatic.

1Password 8 is now available for iOS and Android. The mobile password management has been extensively revised and is intended to give users faster access to passwords and other data stored there, as the manufacturer announced. The app’s home screen can be customized and designed for this purpose, and completing password queries in the browser should also be faster. Users can also group their vaults into collections more flexibly.

The new version 8 of the password app requires a 1Password account, without a cloud subscription to the provider, the safes (vaults) can no longer be synchronized. Existing local respectively standalone vaults must be migrated to the 1Password cloud when migrating to version 8. Creating local vaults and alternative synchronization via iCloud and Dropbox are no longer possible.

The update to 1Password 8 must be initiated manually: The new version is available as a standalone app in the App Store and Google Play Store and is therefore not automatically installed over version 7. If you want to switch to the new version, you have to download it yourself and then migrate the safes.

1Password had already quietly removed the option to freshly create local vaults in version 7. The function was only brought back after considerable criticism from customers. If you want to continue managing standalone vaults in 1Password, you will have to stay on version 7, for which no further updates are apparently planned. The complete conversion to the in-house cloud subscription service has been driving 1Password for a long time, so the apps can no longer be bought, only subscribed to. 1Password last raised over $600 million in venture capital in January 2022.
