OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G, analysis: OnePlus’s Trojan horse to conquer the mid-range

OnePlus launched 2022 with a mobile of the highest range, the OnePlus 10 Pro, but it has not yet left China. The one that did appear in international lands was the OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G, a mid-range that points out ways for its great balance in hardware, software and design. We have tested it and we can corroborate it

The renewed commitment to the mid-range within the Nord family comes to compete with brands that have become strong in that price segment, the one that goes from 200 to 400 euros. The OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G stays closer to the second limit than the first, but it offers much more than can be expected at first glance. In fact, he does not have much to envy of his older brothers; At least for the experience it offers.

An attractive and compact design despite the plastic construction

OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G

The Nord family is the most accessible of OnePlus, this is noticeable inside the mobiles and also on the outside: the OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G offers a polycarbonate body that is finished off by the back face of the same material. The result is a mobile with a pleasant touch, which appears solid despite this contrast with the plastic and, above all, keeps the lines contained thanks to its compact size. At least by today’s standards, of course.

In hand, the touch is pleasant, the grip does not become excessively slippery, all the buttons are at the height of a comfortable press (it does not offer an Alert Slider selector), the OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G includes a headphone jack, boasts dual SIM and also SD memory expansion. All with a weight that, although it is not light, is not annoying either.

OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G

It is a mid-range mobile, except for the screen: OnePlus offers a 6.43-inch Fluid AMOLED panel with great quality, sharpness and color representation. Good viewing angles, the experience is fluid, it reaches the refresh rate of 90 Hz (it greatly contributes to the aforementioned fluidity), it maintains the great contrast of AMOLED and it looks good enough in most conditions, both in twilight (the minimum brightness could be less) and under the sun (readable screen that would not despise an extra brightness either).

In the field of sound we find certain chiaroscuro. If we go to the bad side, we must highlight the regular performance of your external speaker: Unique, with shrillness above half volume and a certain canned sound (although very loud). On the good side, OnePlus does a good job with audio through headphones, both wired and wireless: 3.5mm jack, good sound quality, balanced bass and treble, some bass boost and better software Real HD Sound (manages to enhance the richness of the audio). In terms of Bluetooth codecs, the OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G has SBC, AAC, aptX (HD, Adaptive and TWS), LDAC and LHDC.

One last point in this section deserves to take the fingerprint reader: optical, under the screen and with a more than decent performance. We have not had to repeat too many readings, unlocking is immediate and, in addition, OnePlus adds facial unlocking with the front camera. It is less secure, also very practical.

A performance that is quite close to the high end

OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G

It is not the first mobile that we tested with the MediaTek Dimensity 920, a SoC that goes a long way for the range to which it belongs. In fact, it greatly enhances the great experience with the OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G: it shows up very fast, it can run any application, does not get overheated even during long gaming sessions and even the titles are executed by raising the graphic requirements to high levels.

OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G

We have been testing the phone with the usual Genshin Impact and PUBG. In the first we were able to adjust the graphic settings to the maximum without running into lags, heating or lack of power; the second did not allow us to activate beyond the medium level, always with a very fast operation and without appreciable graphical errors.

We come to the software section, another of the most controversial of the phone. To be new part with Android 11 instead of Android 12; keeping OxygenOS 11.3 looking polished, consistent, and high-quality (OxygenOS 12 breaks this aesthetic balance in software). Don’t abuse bloatware, OnePlus includes a good number of extras without straying too far from the “stock Android” style and, as of this writing, it offers the January security patch. OnePlus ensures that the Nord CE 2 will receive two key Android updates; with the drawback that, starting with 11, it will not reach the versions that would correspond to it by dates.

We change the third with another of the points where the phone has behaved like a champion: the battery. It turned out to be indestructible, with a capacity beyond any doubt, the OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G wastes autonomy to stay away from the plug up to four days with moderate use. It has left us with very good feelings.

OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G

OxygenOS 11.3 consumes very little with the screen off (some notifications can be lost), it lasts more than eight hours with the panel on without flinching, the energy consumption is not altered by strange fluctuations and the load is overwhelming: the 65 W that the charger plugs in makes the mobile complete in just over half an hour. Specifically.

  • 5 minute charge: 25% battery.
  • 10 minute charge: 45% battery.
  • 15 minute charge: 62% battery.
  • 20 minute charge: 77% battery.
  • 25 minute charge: 90% battery.
  • Total: 33 minutes.

Decent photography by day and too fair at night

OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G

Our protagonist shows off the multiplicity of cameras as an added value, something common even in the mid-range to which it belongs. It also flaunts numbers when it comes to the main sensor: 64 megapixels; with an 8 megapixel wide angle camera. Given the range to which it belongs, the OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G does not include mechanical image stabilization (OIS). It does offer software stabilization (EIS); with decent performance in stabilized video recording.

It does not have a bad photographic experience, neither due to lack of camera options (includes expert mode, although not saved in RAW) nor due to general results. During the day and with sufficient light, it is not a problem.; As the lighting decreases, the shots suffer, even activating the night mode.

OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G

Auto HDR improves dynamic range at the cost of applying excessive contrast; with a tendency to leave the darkest areas somewhat underexposed (and burned the areas that concentrate a greater amount of light). White balance does not always keep the scene natural. yesand appreciate the lack of detail with a little zoomeven outdoors and in good lighting.

OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G

Night mode processing can go from artist to unrealistic shots

As the light falls, the OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G sees its photographic capabilities hampered until it obtains shots with an excess of watercolors, even with the naked eye. The night mode does not usually improve the captures even if it does manage to obtain more light from the scenes, always at the cost of raising the ISO and make unreal catches more times than you should.

The processing does not finish maintaining the naturalness of the shot: OnePlus tends to saturate the greens and apply a certain warm tone in the white balance (sometimes even cold). When the lighting is uniform usually wash the image.

OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G

The camera app inherits the good work of the big brothers to include enough manual adjustments, automatic shooting without worries and some playful details. The app is fast in the interaction, although it takes a little while to process and save each shot.

OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G 13

Shot during the day and outdoors with the automatic HDR in operation. The dynamic range is good, it applies excessive contrast and there is some saturation of the green. Zooming in shows loss of detail.

OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G

In this case, the night mode has maintained the naturalness by rescuing light, always at the cost of creating a watercolor.

OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G

The portrait mode with the rear camera does not finish adjusting the contour, nor does the blur look natural. Bokeh is customizable in aperture (by software).

OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G

The front camera does not offer much quality, neither for the detail that it can capture nor for the processing that the phone executes. The portrait mode is a bit forced: sharp contours, excessive bokeh and faces that are too washed out, even without the beauty mode activated.

Below is a camera sample of the OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G. If you want to see the images in their original size you can access this Google Drive folder.

OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G, the opinion of EuroXliveAndroid

OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G

Our protagonist is a great phone in most respects: it does everything decently; despite the fact that in some aspects it stands out and in others it lowers the general grade. Even so, It is a great recommendation for the 349 euros it costs: the mid-range suits you quite well.

OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G

The screen and the autonomy are two of the aspects that are clearly worth it, also the design; Dimensional content and fast charging enhance the experience with the OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G; the software is of great quality, but it should not offer a version of Android and layer 2021; and the camera leaves a lot to be desired as the light goes down, also the processing does not end up being in line with what is expected from OnePlus.

Coming out in 2022 with Android 11 does not leave the OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G in a very good place: with the promise of two years of updates, the phone will only reach Android 13

From our experience, and taking into account the 349 euros that the phone costs, the OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G is a great recommendation for those who want a well-balanced mobile.

In favor

  • Autonomy is impressive.
  • Excellent fast charge for what it costs.
  • The screen is at an excellent level.

  • Going to market with Android 11 is not the best guarantee of updates.
  • The cameras are too weak, even for a mid-range.

The terminal has been transferred for testing by OnePlus. Can inquire our policy of relationships with enterprises.
