nothing phone (1): the first details of the construction revealed

It was launched a few days ago and, whatever one can think of the intrinsic qualities of Nothing’s first smartphone, it was objectively one of the most talked about devices of recent times, thanks to the massive media campaign carried out by the Company. Waiting for more in-depth tests, the first insights arrive on Nothing Phone (1), specifically the one that goes a little more into the merits of the construction with a first teardown.

Uncover what is hidden inside in the specific case it is a slightly out of place expression since one of the distinctive features of the smartphone is the transparent back which already shows some details on the interior. However, the video – made by youtuber Dave2D – goes deeper, even if the operation is not as thorough as those carried out by iFixit.

In the initial part you can see how the transparent cover is glued to the body: to remove it you must first heat the glue, then use a spudger and picks to separate the two parts. When you continue with the disassembly you can see that Nothing has used interesting technical solutions: the structure is partly modular – note for example the speaker connected via pogo pin – and by removing some plastic covers you can bare the main ones. components.

At the end of the operations the following are disassembled:

  • transparent rear glass
  • led module: Note that each bar is coated with a film which should improve the diffusion of light
  • coil for wireless charging: it has the particularity of not being circular like other similar components, but has the upper and lower edges cut to accommodate the aesthetic lines of the back of the smartphone
  • various elements in plastic and metal materials introduced for aesthetic purposes: please note that the smartphone is made with a 100% recycled aluminum frame and that half of the plastic components derive from bio materials or recycling processes

The main body of the smartphone has not been disassembled to avoid the risk of damage. We will therefore have to wait to have an opinion on the repairability of the smartphone. This first video, however, highlights how Nothing has used non-trivial solutions to give life to the product; the partly modular structure should also allow Nothing Phone (1) to have a fairly high repairability index (but iFixit’s judgment in this regard is awaited).
