Apple AirPods are one of the best wireless headphones on the market, but their price means they are not within the reach of all pockets.

Some shoppers may be tempted to turn to stores that sell them at a deep discount. However, depending on where you shop, there’s a chance you could end up with fake AirPods.

Luckily, with the release of iOS 16, your iPhone will now tell you if your AirPods are fake.

Shortly after yesterday’s iPhone 14 unveiling event, Apple released the final build candidate of iOS 16 to developers and public beta testers. In that version, 9to5Mac found internal system files revealing that iOS 16 is capable of detecting fake AirPods.

After installing iOS 16, iPhone and iPad owners will see the following message when trying to pair counterfeit AirPods: “These earphones could not be verified as genuine AirPods and may not behave as expected.”

The popup will have a “Learn More” button that will likely direct the user to a support article on Apple’s website.

In addition, the notice will have a “Do not connect” button. Apple probably won’t prevent the use of fake headphones, but at least you’ll have a choice about whether or not you want to use them now that you know they’re fake.

Apple also announced the AirPods Pro 2 at its event on Wednesday. Unsurprisingly, the second-gen AirPods Pro feature a number of significant improvements, including twice the noise cancellation, a new extra-small earpad, touch controls, and a new charging case.
