Not only Netflix and YouTube: more platforms lower the quality of their streams

The state of alarm decreed by the Government on March 14 in Spain confined the majority of citizens from all over the country to their homes, which, unsurprisingly, Internet consumption skyrocketed in every conceivable area.

Both for teleworking, videoconferencing and, of course, for the reproduction of the content on streaming which is one of the funniest plans we can enjoy these days.

All that simultaneous consumption has caused a funnel that, according to the operators, could cause problems in the service if measures are not taken. The main one arrived last Thursday when the European Commission itself requesting all service operators in streaming that reduced the quality of its emissions, of the signal that reaches our devices, whether they are Smart TVs, mobiles, tablets, etc.

Primero Netflix and YouTube

Netflix was the first to respond, followed by YouTube, which did so after the notice of the European authorities and, over the days, many others have joined that request to prevent the entire system from falling. One of them is Prime Video from Amazon, which announced similar measures to the previous ones, that they chose to stop serving series and movies in 4K (2160p), FullHD (1080p) or HD (720p) to leave them all in SD, that is, 480p.

But Amazon was not the only one, and on the part of Facebook also there has been a response for two of its leading platforms: on the one hand the social network itself, and on the other Instagram, which will see the reduced bitrate of their emissions, without specifying exactly how much loss of quality it means, if they have chosen to stay with an SD resolution or something better, such as HD. Be that as it may, if you watch the videos a little more blurry, there is no need to be alarmed.

And finally, we have Disney + which, although it will officially arrive in Spain tomorrow, has already announced that it will do so by cutting the quality of its content thus joining all the other leading players in the sector in our country. In the case of Mickey Mouse’s parents, they do not talk so much about resolutions as the percentage of quality loss in the streaming which they put at 25% cut.

Taking into account that the platform will come to Spain offering 4K content, 25% less would mean broadcasting everything in FullHD, which would not be bad at all because it is a resolution more than enough to enjoy, for example, the Mandalorian.
