end of roaming coverage

Although we always talk about very high percentages of mobile network coverage in Spain, the truth is that it is a figure with something of a “trick”. Years ago, operators stopped talking about the percentage of the territory with coverage to talking about the percentage of the population with coverage. This explains why, operators with almost 100% coverage, do not work well on roads, mountains or areas far from cities. Things get more complicated when we talk about 4G and now the government has launched the public consultation of the UNICO-5G Networks program to identify areas with insufficient 4G coverage in Spain.

Flawless coverage of 4G networks is vital to continue the evolution of mobile technology. It’s not possible turn off 3G or 2G if we are unable to offer an equal or better alternative. Good 4G coverage allows us to take advantage of technologies such as VoLTE with which we do without 2G or 3G when making calls. In Spain, more than 70,000 areas with poor 4G coverage have been identified, that is, incapable of offering 10 Mbps of download speed and 3 Mbps of upload.

Public consultation of the UNICO-5G Networks program

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation has launched a public consultation that will help it define the actions to be carried out with the UNICO – 5G Networks program. Broadly speaking, 150 million euros have been reserved for “the extension of passive 4G / 5G infrastructures in areas with insufficient 4G coverage”.

With the passive infrastructures, the program refers to elements that are vital to offer these technologies, and the money can be used for towers, masts or poles, conduits, power supply systems or connection networks to public energy networks or elements and protection systems of infrastructures.

In this public consultation the areas that may receive aid will also be identified. Right now, more than 70,000 have been identified without 4G or whose 4G coverage is not capable of providing at least 10 Mbps. Here municipalities with more than 10,000 inhabitants and highways are not included (Except for those included in the obligations of the 700 MHz band tender). The published list is preliminary and you can consult it at this link (PDF 44MB).

The consultation will serve to see which are the agents that will be eligible for this aid, the geographical scope of the competition, the conditions under which the beneficiaries must offer the operators the use of the infrastructures, the intensity of the aid and the evaluation criteria. . In any case, projects that cover the greatest number of people will be favored.
