The firmware for the magnetic charging cable for iPhone has been updated. It may come as a surprise to many that the device needs software at all.

For many, the mere fact that this product has firmware should be news: Apple has released a software update for the MagSafe charger. However, it is not known what exactly changes on the magnetically adhering charging part. These are probably adjustments to make the charger work better with new products like the iPhone 14 and the second-generation AirPods Pro.

As with the AirPods, the update is silently installed in secret. It was noticed by the change in the firmware number, as reported by MacRumors. Instead of 247.0.0.0, 255.0.0.0 suddenly appeared in the settings app – a detail that very few owners of a MagSafe charger look at. The update is titled with the version number 10M1821, the previous one was 10M229.

The MagSafe Charger was introduced in autumn 2020 and appeared together with the iPhone 12. It is already the third firmware update. The chargers deliver up to 15W of power and can also charge existing Qi-enabled devices.
