The new password policy implemented by Netflix, which restricts access sharing, caused the company to lose around 1 million users in Spain. The change is already in effect in some countries and is still being analyzed by the platform.
The data is from a study by the Kantar Group and point out that Netflix lost at least 1 million users in Spain in the first three months of 2023. The reason for this drop would be linked to the new password sharing guidelines.
The drop in the number of subscribers to the Netflix in Spain gained strength in February this year, when the platform tightened the siege. Of the approximately 1 million people who gave up streaming in the European country, two-thirds used third-party passwords.
please note that Netflix wants subscribers to pay additional fees for sharing your login details with friends, family and others. Countries like Canada, Portugal, Spain and New Zealand are already under surveillance of this rule.
The new policy has not yet arrived in Europe and Netflix postponed the plan to expand the end of password sharing to other nations to analyze some issues, such as the high number of cancellations registered in Spain, for example.
Netflix maintains its defense of the new guidelines, despite admitting that early reactions have not been positive. The company estimates that around 100 million around the world use other people’s login data and don’t pay for streaming.
“We see cancellations in every new market where we announce the news [das novas taxas]”, Netflix commented this April. However, streaming expects the negative responses to be temporary and the scenario to change over time.
