Lord Mayor Hazel Chu´s time in the Mansion House has come to an end with Dublin City Council preparing to elect Dublin’s newest first citizen.

There is little mystery surrounding who will be Dublin´s 353rd Lord Mayor as veteran Labour councillor Alison Gilliland is to be voted in on Monday night.

The Monaghan native has been a councillor for the Artane/Whitehall area since 2014 and will become the 10th ever female Dublin Lord Mayor.

Gilliland has an interesting background and politics hasn´t been her only profession over the years.

She is a former primary school teacher who has taught in Darndale and Swords as well as previously teaching English in Spain.

Alongside being a councillor, she has a long background in trade unionism.

Gilliland is the current equality officer for the Irish National Teachers Organisation.

She previously ran to be INTO General Secretary, but was unsuccessful.

Over her seven years working as a Dublin City Councillor, the Labour politician has been involved in numerous committees.

Most notably, Gilliland is the chairperson of Dublin City Council’s housing strategic policy committee.

She is also a member of the Dublin City Council Corporate Policy Group, the Special Committee for Fire/Ambulance Services and Emergency Management and the North Central Area Committee.
