Neuralink in trouble, another co-founder leaves, and brain implants will have to wait

Neuralink was born promising a lot. We saw videos of a monkey playing with a screen using only thought, and there is a huge amount of news about the advances that were being made with the brain implant of this Elon Musk company, but the problems exist, and they are many.

On the one hand, we cannot help but remember that some of the monkeys that participated in the experiment died, but now more stones have been published along the way.

Paul Merolla, another of the co-founders of Neuralink, has left the team, being the eighth already out the door. Elon Musk promised to create a “Fitbit in your skull”, but it seems that for now everything will remain in science fiction.

Two people familiar with the matter told Reuters that Merolla, an expert in machine learning, had left the company, but the reasons have not yet been disclosed.

Neuralink was founded in 2016, six years ago, but has not managed to have the success of Tesla or SpaceX, other Elon Musk companies. In 2020 the company was struggling with rushed deadlines and canceled projects, and reports of animal abuse didn’t exactly help the image. There are also former employees have complained about working conditions.

In 2021, just one year ago, it was Neuralink president Max Hodak who jumped ship to set up his own company, Science Corp, taking some high-ranking Neuralink employees with him.

This does not mean that neural implants do not work, or that they are not a marvel of science and technology, but it seems that it is still early to expose humanity to something like this.
