MIUI 14, based on Android 13, is official in China: it debuts together with Xiaomi 13 and 13 Pro, the company’s new generation of top-of-the-range smartphones. As anticipated in recent days, Xiaomi focuses on efficiency, security and privacy. Project Razor it is the initiative that aims to optimize the consumption of system resources to the extreme, especially from the point of view of volatile memory and archiving. Among the highlights:

  • Reduction of factory-installed apps and increase of those that can be removed
  • Compression of infrequently used apps
  • In case of duplicate files, only one copy is actually saved taking up space

HOW THE HOME SCREEN CHANGES

Xiaomi has also contributed quite significant changes to the interface, focusing on the three shapes you see in the first image above – circle, “pill” (basically a rectangle with two semicircles as shorter sides) and “squircle” (square with rounded edges). They are adopted by widgets and icons on the home screen, which can be filled with various combinations and joints. Icons can also be organized into folders, and a screenshot suggests that even subfolders are supported.

PRIVACY AND SECURITY

Xiaomi said it has invested heavily in improving the operating system’s security and its focus on privacy. One of the most important details is the reduction of the use of the cloud: the company says that information processing is now done locally for “over 30 scenarios” – what exactly is meant by “scenarios” is currently unclear due to a language barrier, but a feature recognition feature has been shown text from images that looks like one of them. Xiaomi also claimed to have obtained several certifications from independent bodies and researchers.

AHEAD WITH THE IOT

The IoT sector is always one of Xiaomi’s big priorities, especially in China; the company showed new paradigms of smartphone interaction with connected devices – in particular, the possibility of displaying each of these in specific “bubbles”, each with specialized controls according to need. For example, with audio products you can use drag & drop to change the output. In addition, a tabbed layout is provided for all smart devices of the Mijia family.
