Microsoft will release a feature that allows you to run multiple installations of Windows within Linux

THE Microsoft should soon release a function that allows you to perform multiple installations of the Windows inside Linux. The information was released by senior Microsoft Linux engineer Jinank Jain this Thursday (3) in a series of patches on the feature.

published the engineer ssenior:

This patch series plans to add support for running nested Microsoft Hypervisor. In case of nested Microsoft Hypervisor, there are few privileged hypercalls that need to go to Hypervisor L0 instead of Hypervisor L1. This series of patches basically identifies these hypercalls and replaces them with nested hypercalls.

  • mshv: add support for detecting nested hypervisor

  • hv: configure synchronous records in case of nested root partition

  • hv: Add an interface to make nested hypercalls

  • hv: Enable vmbus driver for nested root partition

  • hv, mshv : change interrupt vector for nested root partition

Nested virtualization allows users to run a virtual machine (VM) inside another Hyper-V virtual machine. So soon, perhaps in time for the 6.2 version of the Linux kernel, it will be possible to have more than one instance of Windows inside Linux.

As the Neowin website pointed out, generally, nested virtualization is something designed for use by companies and Microsoft may also be adding the feature keeping that in mind. Still, this role should be a fun experience.
