The French Commission for Information and Freedom (CNIL, for its acronym in French), fined Microsoft 90 million euros, about R$ 497 million in direct conversion, after analyzing resources related to the cookie service in Bing, the company’s native search engine. which is enabled by default in the Edge browser.
According to an investigation carried out by the authorities, when using the bing.com service, the user does not find the same facility to reject cookies as seen in the function to accept them. In this case, the report says that to refuse the collection of this information, it is necessary to click twice instead of one, making the refusal action difficult.
In parallel to this, the CNIL also found a cookie file that is automatically activated without the search engine user needing to approve it, contrary to the regulations of the country’s Data Protection Law. Evidently, this can benefit the developer considering that the cookies in question relate to advertising.
Cookies are fragments of files exchanged between the computer and the server to remember navigation details, improving the experience of using the browser and ads. The European body determined that changes be implemented on the platform within three months with a daily fine of 60 thousand euros, around R$ 331 thousand, in case of delay.
The investigation found no other problems with the search engine. Despite this accusation of making it difficult to refuse cookies on Bing, Microsoft curiously offers several native tools on Edge to block or allow the collection of these files by specific websites, in addition to limiting navigation tracking, providing more privacy.
