Former FanByte and Game Informer journalist Imran Khan revealed that Microsoft would be in talks to acquire Japanese studios and publishers.

The objective would be to increase the Xbox Game Pass catalog, expanding its variety with more Japanese titles.

In recent years, Microsoft has acquired several developers and publishers to integrate Xbox Game Studios, such as Double Fine Productions, responsible for the acclaimed Psychonauts, and Bethesda Game Studios, known for Doom, Skyrim and Fallout.

Although the purchase of Activision Blizzard is still under investigation by regulators, the company is already in talks with more companies to bring more studios to the Xbox.

During Jeff Grubb’s Giant Bombcast, Khan said that Microsoft would be interested in acquiring at least one major Japanese publisher and began negotiations. According to him, the company wants to adopt the strategy of producing original content, something that Phil Spencer had already revealed.

Microsoft would also aim to bring in more studios so they don’t have to pay licensing fees to developers and other publishers when putting their games on Xbox Game Pass.

Disclosure.

Grubb also cited that the Redmond giant would be looking for new developers and publishers to stay competitive, after Tencent and Sony acquired part of From Software, responsible for Elden Ring, Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

In recent years, Microsoft has dealt with player complaints about the lack of Japanese titles on the console, especially compared to its biggest rival, Sony. So buying Japanese studios would be a practical way of dealing with the problem.
