Wintry conditions are set to dominate the weather over the coming days, with plenty of rain, sleet and snow forecast.

This morning will be frosty in many areas, with maximum temperatures of 3-6 degrees.

Met Eireann’s forecast reads: “It will be a mostly dry day nationwide with lots of crisp winter sunshine. However, a few showers are possible in Atlantic coastal areas and along the north coast.

“Maximum afternoon temperatures generally ranging 3 to 6 degrees in light northwest or variable winds.”

Tonight

Temperatures will reach as low as -3 degrees tonight, with rain, sleet and snow due.

The forecast reads: “Frost and ice setting in quickly after dark tonight with temperatures dipping back to between 0 and -3 degrees.

“However, as cloud thickens from the west and southerly winds strengthen the frost and ice will clear from most areas as temperatures rise. A band of rain will reach the west coast soon after midnight, extending quickly eastwards and turning to sleet or snow for a short time in parts of Ulster.”

Tomorrow

Heavy, wintry showers will fall tomorrow, with highest temperatures of 8 degrees in the afternoon.

The forecast says: “Heavy rain will clear from eastern counties during Thursday morning with sunny spells and frequent showers following from the west. Showers will turn increasingly wintry as the day progresses with colder air pushing in from the Atlantic.

“Falls of sleet or snow are possible in some areas by evening, mainly across the western half of the country. Afternoon highs of 4 to 8 degrees but turning much colder by evening time with a fresh to strong and gusty southwest to west wind.”
