It seems that MediaTek is finally ready to give a real battle to Qualcomm and all the others in the segment of the top-of-the-range mobile SoCs – and not just be considered as the budget alternative with some significant sacrifices. According to reports from the ever prolific Digital Chat Station on the Chinese social network Weibo, the brand new Dimensity 9000 chip announced just a few days ago it will cost well more than the Dimensity 1200 predecessor – almost double, in fact. It will continue to cost a little less than Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, which will be made official tomorrow, but let’s say that the gap is narrowing in an important way. An actually predictable development, given that even the benchmarks showed substantial parity between the two products.

To be clear and contextualized, chip prices are not public – and are governed by multiple parameters that cause them to fluctuate significantly. For example, a lot depends on the relationships between the various companies and on the purchase volumes. It is difficult to know precisely what these prices are, but for the top-of-the-range chips they are probably / roughly around $ 50-100 each. As we know MediaTek’s story was quite peculiar: after a slightly too exuberant start, with chips in every band at the expense of quality, he decided to make a sort of strategic retreat and focus on less prestigious chips for a few years, in order to consolidate his know-how and become truly competitive; in more recent times it has begun to approach the higher end of the market with increasingly convincing products. In 2020, the company even surpassed Qualcomm in the volume of chips sold to suppliers.

Meanwhile, the alleged logo of the new generation chip leaked over the weekend. “For friends” 8Gx?

With the tech summit last week, MediaTek has in a sense unveiled its plans for the coming year. The product portfolio nomenclature has undergone a radical change of strategy for its Dimensity 5G chips, with the top-of-the-range model passing from the 1000 series to the 9000, leaving the field open to other lower series (advances have already emerged on the 7000, for example).

Dimensity 9000 is also the first SoC in the world made with a 4 nm manufacturing process. However, the record is just a few days, given that Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 will be too (as well as Exynos 2100, after all). Furthermore, time-to-market may indeed be in Qualcomm’s favor: according to rumors the first devices equipped with Dimensity 9000 will arrive on the market by February, while the first exponent of “Snapdragon team” could be presented even before the end of this year, with availability shortly after.
