Local councillor calls for more garda resources after man shot dead in Finglas

A local councillor is calling for more garda resources in Finglas after a fatal shooting this morning.

Cllr Keith Connolly said that a greater garda presence is needed as soon as possible due to a number of ongoing feuds in the area.

Gardaí and emergency services rushed to a fatal shooting at Deanstown Avenue at around 4:30am

29-year-old James Whelan was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cllr Connolly told Dublin Live that action needs to be taken immediately to help the community feel safe.

He said: A 29-year-old man has lost his life. Further garda resources need to be allocated in the area.

“That’s the main feel I’m getting.

“I send my condolences to his family. Anyone with information should contact An Garda Siochana.”

Gardai are currently appealing for witnesses, particularly those with dash cam footage.

A garda spokesman said: “Gardaí in Finglas continue to investigate a fatal shooting incident that occurred in the Deanstown Area, Finglas, Dublin 11, this morning, Sunday 3rd April 2022.

“Gardaí and emergency services attended a scene at Deanstown Avenue at approximately 4:30am.

“A man, aged in his 20s, was discovered with a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The scene remains preserved and technical examinations are ongoing by the Garda Technical Bureau.

“The body was removed from the scene a post mortem examination has been concluded this evening by Chief State Pathologist Dr. Linda Mulligan, at the City Morgue, Whitehall.

“An Garda Síochána have appointed a family liaison officer to the family of the deceased and continue to engage with the family at this time.

“Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information on this fatal shooting to contact investigating Gardaí at Finglas Garda Station.

“An Garda Síochána are also appealing for any person in the area of Deanstown Avenue, Deanstown Green, Deanstown Road, Cardiffsbridge Road, Dublin 11 or any adjacent/ surrounding roads between 9.00pm Saturday 2nd April and 04.30am on Sunday 3rd April 2022, particularly the drivers of any vehicle or other roads users who may have video footage (Dashcam or other form…) to contact investigating Gardaí.
