The new version 4.2 of the universal and free content management system Joomla brings with it some minor changes that consistently improve usability. Among other things, the backend can be controlled via new key combinations. Because the browser [Strg], [Alt] and intercepts a few other keys, the Joomla developers use their own scheme that takes some getting used to: First you press the J key briefly and then trigger the desired action with another key. For example, J followed by F jumps to a search field that may exist, J and S save and close the currently open post. J and X bring an overview with all available key combinations on the screen. Extensions can also offer their own keyboard shortcuts.
Joomla has had two-factor authentication for a long time. Version 4.2 goes one step further and allows multi-factor authentication. It is possible to register via YubiKey, the WebAuthn procedure, a verification code such as that generated by the Google Authenticator smartphone app, or an authentication code sent by email. If you opt for WebAuthn, you can also use Windows Hello. In addition, the developers have slightly changed the associated registration process. While older versions asked for the second factor directly together with the password, users under Joomla 4.2 initially only log in with their username and password. The content management system then requests the additional factor on a separate page.
Joomla streamlines overviews
Many lists in the backend overwhelm administrators with their wealth of information. In Joomla 4.2 you can quickly hide individual columns with a mouse click and thus create an overview. Joomla presents all permitted actions of a user in a fairly large table. The developers have also streamlined them somewhat. Furthermore, the actions of the media manager can also be regulated via the rights management. Finally, the content management system reveals why a category is currently not visible on the website.
In parallel with Joomla 4.2, the developers also released Joomla 3.10.11. As a bug fix release, this version mainly closes security gaps and is aimed at website operators who are still running their website with Joomla 3.10. Support for this series of versions will run until August 2023. For new installations, the developers advise using Joomla 4.2 directly.
