The Japan Fair Trade Commission, the country’s antitrust regulator, approved Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard when considering that there will be no bad or harmful effects for the competition after the conclusion of the deal.

As Reuters news agency reported, the regulator has also notified other companies that it will not issue a cease and desist order against the takeover and its review of the takeover process is now definitively complete.

Japan’s antitrust regulator’s decision is particularly interesting as it implies that Sony’s efforts to block the deal, even in its home country, have been unsuccessful and the deal is headed for the doldrums.

With this decision, Japan joins the growing list of regulators that have approved the transaction. Europe and the Saudi Arabia gave their blessing a few months ago and the UK authority gave an interim decision also in favor of Microsoft.

However, the UK authority is yet to assess the impact of the takeover in the cloud gaming market, with Microsoft trying to assuage potential concerns by signing 10-year Call of Duty distribution deals with other companies.

While it initially looked like Microsoft was facing major difficulties because of strong resistance from Sony and some antitrust regulators, the tide appears to have started to turn in the Redmond company’s favor in recent months.
