Samsung appears to be gearing up for the jump to a 200MP camera after equipping its last three generations of flagships with a 108MP unit. Next year’s Galaxy S23 Ultra is almost officially confirmed to feature the highest resolution smartphone camera to date. According to the Korean publication ET News, Samsung has communicated to its camera component suppliers that the Galaxy S23 Ultra will feature a 200 MP camera on the rear. The report claims that the Korean giant has placed orders for components for the new camera sensor. He has also shared details of the development plan and a tentative production schedule.

The possible ISOCELL HP2 will be the protagonist

Unfortunately, we don’t have much information about the sensor itself. Rumors suggest that Samsung will call it ISOCELL HP2. The company has already released two 200 MP cameras for phones: ISOCELL HP1 last year and ISOCELL HP3 earlier this year. The former recently debuted on Motorola’s Moto X30 Pro. ISOCELL HP2 sits between these two sensors in Samsung’s 200MP camera range. However, it will be better in terms of photographic and videographic capabilities. Samsung calls it the HP2 because of its pixel size, as it will have 0.6μm pixels, smaller than the HP1’s 0.64μm, but larger than the HP3’s 0.56μm. The latter boasts the smallest camera pixels in the industry to date. Apart from this, there is not much information available about the ISOCELL HP2 at the moment. The new report tells us that Samsung Electro-Mechanics and Samsung Electronics will manufacture the sensor in a 70:30 ratio. Note that only the Galaxy S23 Ultra will use it. The Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ will likely stay at 50MP, or upgrade to 108MP.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra will not present changes in the rest of the cameras

While Samsung is switching to a 200MP camera for the main camera on the Galaxy S23 Ultra, the rest of the cameras will remain unchanged from the Galaxy S22 Ultra, at least in terms of megapixels. Expect a 12MP ultra-wide lens, a 10MP periscope lens for 10X optical zoom, and another 10MP camera for 3X optical zoom. However, it is possible for the company to improve the image quality. Samsung is expected to introduce the Galaxy S23 series early next year.
