One publican’s speech defending indoor pubs reopening today from keyboard warrior abuse has gone viral as over 2000 pubs are set to reopen today.
Shane, who works in the Balgriffin Inn on the Malahide Road took to Facebook over the abuse his pub and other indoor pubs have been getting particularly over the last 24 hours.
A lot of the anger from customers comes from the Government’s decision to only allow fully vaccinated/ fully recovered people to dine indoors.
Some see this as discriminatory but Shane makes it clear that he doesn’t agree with all of the rules.
“We’ve been the hardest hit industry in the last 16 months in this country.”
“We’ve followed the rules whether we agree with them or not…we have 20 people in now for our last staff meeting and training, 20 people out of work some for the last six months some for the last six weeks who have families, mortgages to pay.”
“And to see the abuse coming in from people sitting at home saying ‘discriminate; never gonna spend a penny in that kip again’, all we’re trying to do is get people back to work.”
A number of pubs over the weekend confirmed that they would not be reopening their indoor dining area as it was unsafe for staff who are not yet vaccinated.
However, some pubs have also said they won’t be reopening indoor as it’s discriminatory against the un-vaccinated.
Shane said: “They all have outdoor areas packed in the heatwave we have at the moment, it’s very easy to take the moral high ground.”
This has led to pubs with only the option of indoor dining becoming targets for abuse online.
“This has now snowballed into…. [people saying] ‘fair play to ya. Wish every pub was like that and we’re gonna spend our money with you, not them’,” Shane said.
The Government assistance for pubs to pay things like rent and mortgages ends today so the need for indoor pubs to reopen is even more severe.
