Update (05/30/23) – JB

Smartphones in the iPhone 15 line may start to support 15W fast wireless charging on non-MagSafe chargers. The rumor was reinforced by the ChargerLab portal on Tuesday.

According to people who have access to Apple’s plans, this evolution should cause the devices to stop charging at 7.5W in chargers not certified by the Cupertino company.

Currently, this limitation is present in the iPhone 14 line and this makes many accessory manufacturers obliged to go through the company’s certification program.

By releasing the full Qi2 standard, the tendency is for the price of wireless chargers for iPhones to drop substantially, since many companies will be able to compete for users of the iPhone 15 line.

However, those who believe that this is a “goodwill” action by Apple are mistaken. This is because everything indicates that the change is directly related to a dispute with the European Union.

The European bloc requires the use of a USB-C port without any limitation and has also started to target wireless charging by requiring manufacturers not to impose restrictions on third-party chargers.

For now, Apple has not commented on the matter.

iPhone 15 will support wireless charging with third-party products, says rumor

According to a new rumor, the next models of the iPhone 15 lineup should support 15W wireless fast charging and this should work even if third-party chargers and without MagSafe certification are used.

It is worth remembering that, in the case of the iPhone 12, 13 and 14, you must have an official Apple MagSafe wireless magnetic charger or a third-party magnetic charger with official MFM certification (Made for MagSafe). If using a standard Qi-certified wireless charger, these models top out at 7.5W.

According to a Weibo post obtained by news aggregator account “yeux1122” on Naver’s Korean blog, the iPhone 15 series will be able to open 15W wireless magnetic charging using non-MFM certified chargers, which are usually more affordable alternatives.

Despite being a rumor, the claim makes sense, as Apple is contributing to a new version of the open Qi standard that works much like MagSafe. Announced in January 2023 by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), the next-generation Qi2 wireless standard incorporates a magnetic power profile, meaning that devices adopting Qi2 in the future will use the same magnetic technology used in ‌MagSafe‌ devices designed to the iPhone 12 and later.

WPC says the magnetic energy profile in the Qi2 will ensure that battery-powered phones and other mobile products are perfectly aligned with chargers for greater energy efficiency and faster charging‌.

Apple’s decision to make MagSafe technology available to all devices that support Qi2 wireless charging would seem in direct contrast to its stance on USB-C. The iPhone 15 is expected to feature a USB-C port instead of Lightning, which will allow it to comply with the new regulations implemented in Europe.

Rumor has it that iPhone 15 models will officially only be compatible with Apple Made for iPhone (MFi) certified USB-C accessories, which can be used to limit features like fast charging and high-speed data transfers to approved accessories. by Apple.
