iOS 16 is causing a lot of problems for its users. Reports have already indicated bugs on the iPhone 13 screen, when using TikTok, battery drain, annoying permission pop-ups and now one more problem is joining that list. This time, iOS 16 seems to be causing incompatibility for videos shot in Cinema mode in apps like iMovie and Final Cut Pro.

One of the most complete reports comes from user “Ulmi” in the Apple Support Community, where he says:

After spending an hour wondering why I can’t enable cinematic editing in FCP (Final Cut Pro) with footage I shot on my iPhone 14 Pro Max in cinematic mode, I came across several Reddit threads discussing this topic.

It looks like iOS 16 has removed this feature in FCP, which will show a “Cinematic effect cannot be enabled” error (and according to other users the latest iOS 16.1 and macOS Ventura betas don’t solve the problem either). Therefore, an update to FCP (and iMovie) is required to fix the problem.

Another user suggested trying to record videos with iPhone 13 Pro Max to check if the issue was restricted to iPhone 14 Pro, which confirmed that the bug is indeed related to iOS 16.

I just tested it with my “old” iPhone 13 Pro Max (also on iOS 16) and the problem is the same (as many other users have already reported on Reddit). Files are synced via iCloud Photos, but I just tested with AirDrop (with “all photo data”) and it didn’t make any difference. The option to enable cinematic mode in FCP appears with all these files, but if I enable it the error message pops up. So it’s definitely related to iOS 16 and all videos shot with iOS 16, so the downgrade won’t help (apart from the fact that I probably can’t go back to iOS 15 on the iPhone 14 Pro Max).

Other reports on Reddit also point to the same problem, which only makes the situation worse, as many users rely on the iPhone to shoot their footage.

Unfortunately going back to iOS 15 is not an option for most, as Apple blocked this operation with the release of iOS 16. So users have no choice but to wait for a fix via software update or the aforementioned apps.
