When Instagram was created, one of the hallmarks of the social network was that it only allowed you to upload square photos. It was not until 2015 when it allowed to publish horizontal and vertical photographs.
Instagram will allow uploading photos in 9:16 format
Since then, it has rained a lot, and Instagram is completely changing the way of consuming content on the platform, betting on the full screen, turning the feed into something increasingly similar to the browsing experience of TikTok, its great rival in the today and whom he has imitated to the point of launching the now popular Reels.
But despite the fact that some changes incorporated by Instagram -such as the number of recommended contents that are shown- in recent weeks they have not enjoyed the favor of users and the company has had to back down, Instagram is still determined to turn its publication feed into a full-screen trail of content in the purest TikTok style.
A few weeks ago he indicated that all the videos would be shown as Reels and now it has been the CEO of Instagram, Adam Mosseri -who will establish his residence in London in the coming months- who has announced a new important change that will come to Instagram to make it more similar to the app of Chinese origin.
Instagram has no plans to stop focusing on full screen content. That is why, in the coming weeks, it will begin to allow photos to be uploaded in 9:16 formatthat is, vertical and higher than those allowed until now, in order to occupy the entire screen.
Mosseri points out that it doesn’t make sense for users, at the moment, to be able to post full-screen videos on the social network, but not be able to do the same with photos. “We believe that there should be equality of formats,” he says.
Until now, vertical images on Instagram were displayed with a 4:5 ratio, but in the coming weeks, in the testing phase, photos can be uploaded in a 9:16 ratio. It is also expected that the test will be a success and the functionality will be launched for the more than 1,200 million users that Instagram has around the world.
