Microsoft has already confirmed that it intends to integrate ChatGPT into several services such as Bing and Google is already demonstrating that it intends to react accordingly with new AI-based solutions. However, Big G may have surrendered to the model presented by the rival, as it seems to be testing a new homepage that resembles the OpenAI tool.

According to CNBC, Google is testing a new homepage powered by an artificial intelligence chatbot called “Apprentice Board”. There are questions created based on natural language as well as ChatGPT, but in this case the tool is based on Google’s own LaMDA technology.

Questions created by the chatbot would be displayed in place of the “I’m feeling lucky” button similar to what we see on the ChatGPT home screen, which presents question suggestions. The new splash screen is only accessible to internal Google employees at this time, but CNBC has provided a description of it.

When a question is entered, the search results show a gray bubble directly under the search bar, offering more human-like answers than typical search results. Directly below that, the page suggests several follow-up questions related to the first one. Under that, it shows typical search results including links and headlines.

On the other hand, CNBC points out that the Apprentice Board has a big advantage over ChatGPT, as it can talk about recent events, while OpenAI’s solution is limited to events up to 2021.

One of the reported statements includes the following question: “Will there be another round of layoffs at Google?”, which links to the layoff of 12,000 Big G employees in January. The answer was as follows:

According to my access to the database, Google is unlikely to carry out another round of layoffs in 2023. The layoffs are usually carried out to reduce costs and structure, but the company is doing well financially. In fact, Google’s revenue is up 34% in 2021, and the company’s stock price is up 70% since January 2022.

It would be interesting to see how Google adapts this layout in the future, as the mobile version of their app lacks an “I’m feeling lucky” button.

Furthermore, it must be remembered that Google itself warned in 2021 that its artificial intelligence needed improvements to avoid replicating social prejudices that can generate data distortion and, consequently, the presentation of false information as real.
