I have tested the new Samsung Galaxy S24: the most ambitious mobile phones you can buy in Spain

This is what the new Samsung Galaxy S24 are like

The Korean company launches the new Galaxy S24, S24+ and S24 Ultra, three smartphones that are based on AI to conquer the high-end.

Samsung has just presented its new family of high-end smartphones in the United States, the Samsung Galaxy S24, S24+ and S24 Ultra. All the models will arrive in Spain in various colors, but we have been able to spend a few hours with them both in Spain and in San José (California), and we have seen what the immediate future of the company will be like, and its commitment to artificial intelligence, fruit of the collaboration with Google and its announcement today.

From the outside, as has usually happened for a few years, the new Samsung phones seem like a minor iteration. The design is very similar to what has been seen since the Galaxy S21 and changes can only be seen in the screen frame and materials. But It is precisely those changes that attract attention when held in hand, perhaps not so much when seen in photos or videos. The prices are as expected, from 909 euros for the S24, from 1,159 for the S24+ and from 1,479 for the Ultra model.

However, also There are important changes in the software, especially due to the commitment to AI which the company has done very strongly in terms of hardware, with new processors and new materials, highlighting titanium above all, which arrives for the first time in a Samsung Galaxy after Apple introduced it in its iPhone 15 Pro and ProMax.

Titanium and aluminum

Materials have taken on special importance in this Samsung launch. The star is the titanium frame that the S24 Ultra now uses in all its colors, although depending on it it may or may not be slightly tinted. As always happens in these cases, tastes vary, but the gray tone, which is the one that is closest to natural titanium, seems the most elegant, and is the one that the company highlights in its promotional images.

The Galaxy S24 and S24+ do not use this material and opt for aluminum with slightly redesigned frames that make them very comfortable in the hand. Next to those frames is the edge of the screen, which has reduced its frames and its curvature which makes the two smaller models look like models due to the percentage of the front that the screen occupies. Is awesome.

Both the front and back in all three models are made of glass, although the type varies, leaving the most advanced versions of Corning Gorilla Glass for the S24 Ultra. It is striking that the fingerprints do not remain long in the back area or on the frame, although obviously we have only been able to test it for a short period of time and we would have to analyze them for more days to see if this continues to be the case.

More shine

One of the figures that has increased the most in these mobile phones is the brightness of the screen, which can reach 2600 nits in the case of the S24 Ultra, compared to the 1750 that his predecessor had. These figures are among the highest on the market, although what is most surprising is the new screen treatment of this model that significantly reduces reflections that produce lamps, spotlights and different points of light. Even compared to an S23 Ultra the jump is very notable.

The diagonal of the S24 Ultra, as well as its battery, remain at the same figures than the S23 Ultra. Yes, they change the batteries of the smaller modelswhich increase about 100 mAh in each case, as well as screen diagonals, which also rise slightly although the size of the mobile does not change. This is possible due to the edge reduction that we mentioned before.

Power and load

All three new smartphones come with new processors. The S24 and S24+ have an Exynos 2400 while the S24 Ultra arrives with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which is possibly the best chip today. Both processors are designed to be able to develop high power, adjust power consumption and, perhaps most importantly, being able to perform advanced artificial intelligence tasks on the mobile itself. This is very important because most of the new software functions of these terminals use AI.

The RAM in the S24 is 8 GB, while that of the other two is 12 GB. The capacity of the internal memory, not expandable, is 128 and 256 GB in the case of the small model, 256 and 512 GB in the case of the S24+ and 256, 512 and 1 TB in the case of the S24 Ultra. Obviously all advanced communication features are still presentsuch as Wifi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, Dual Band GPS, NFC… yes, the UWB chip of the S24 Ultra and S24+ is still not present in the S24.

The same wired and wireless charges are maintained, that is, 45 W in the case of using a compatible charger (25 W in the case of the S24) and 15 W in the case of using wireless charging. Here Samsung is still far behind the competition but in a sought-after way. Like Apple, Samsung wants to take care of the battery so that its useful life is as long as possible, seeking to ensure that its mobile phones are known to last for many years, both in hardware and software.

Similar cameras and a different one

In the photographic section, few changes are seen in the smaller models, which maintain the 50 Mpx main camera, the 12 Mpx wide angle and the telephoto lens with 3x 10 Mpx optical zoom. The improvements are at the processing level, the ISP (the image processor) and the software. Samsung boasts that low-light photos and videos are improved with the help of AI.

In the case of the S24 Ultra, something similar happens, although with an important change behind it. The main camera of 200 Mpx, the wide angle of 12 Mpx and the optical zoom for portraits of 3x and 10 Mpx are maintained. The change is the periscopic sensor that goes from 10 to 50 Mpx, but also from 10x to 5x. In this way, it is comparable to what the iPhone has.

There will be two zoom options, 2x and 10x, which will be done using a hybrid zoom, similar to the one used in Huawei years ago, but improved, obviously. In the case of the 10x zoom it is said that it obtains optical quality, but the reality is that we have been able to compare it with the 10x zoom of an S23 Ultra and the result is not as good. In return, the 5x zoom is better on the S24 Ultra, as expected. This seems like a better approach, because a 5x zoom is more practical than a 10x zoom, even for those of us who like to take photos of landscapes and buildings.

Should we change?

Whenever a new mobile phone is presented, it is compared with its predecessors, and it is normal, you want to see what the company has done in the last year. The truth is that People who buy any of these phones will come from much older terminalswith less advanced functions and worse features.

Samsung has created three models that at a glance are continuous, but that They have more improvements than it seems. Most of them come from the AI side, as we have commented in another article, but there are also some in the hardware, with better processors, better screens, better autonomy (at least on paper) and prices that are not very different from those of the previous generation.

The brand has made it clear what the future of its mobile phones is, and it is a future with more news than we would have thought a couple of years ago, thanks to the explosion of innovation that artificial intelligence has brought about. The key is not so much what it does, but rather that we will have it in the palm of our hand in a simple and free way.

The prices of the new Samsung Galaxy S24 have not been surprisingor, neither for better nor for worse. The Galaxy S24 costs 909 euros in its 128 GB version and 969 in the 256 GB version. In the case of the Samsung Galaxy S24+ the prices are 1,159 euros for the 256 GB model and 1,279 for the 512 GB model.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is the only one that will have three versions depending on internal memory. The price of the cheapest one, with 256 GB, is 1,479 euros. 100 euros more, 1,579 euros, is what the 512 GB version will be worth. The 1 TB one leaves its price at 1,819 euros.
